as for swearing, there is a filter so that those who don't want to see it, do not have to see it. It's amazing how I can go through an entire day without swearing but yet some people can't hold back once they hit the keyboard! Like I said, there is a filter so.....bfd
Why would you, after being banned, put yourself in a position to have to ask for mercy?
|
Um, I am not sure HR would appreciate people surfing the web at work, so the whole concept is contrived. Content is not really that important, unless one is pointing out boobies to co-workers as well, or downloading illegal stuff like child porn or copyrighted material.
We're just a repressed society, so boobies and naughty words make people cringe.
Bottom line - if you're worried about the hr/work police seeing boobies on your internets, maybe you shouldn't be doing personal surfing at work.
I'm just sayin'...

I really don't care about 35% avatars, but saying that swearing is no big deal because it can be filtered, yet the avatars at work concern is an issue, when they can also be turned off, doesn't make any sense.

You can set your browser to ignore images. Not sure how to do it in Netscape or IE but with Firefox it's Tools>Options>Content> (next to Exceptions(load images automatically)> IH8MUD.com - Home

not everybody knows how to turn those things off......
actually, I e-mailed my buddy in IT at a big local company today and he tells me that each employee is allotted 30 minutes of internet time on sites other than those related to the company. He told me that the company generally doesn't care about words or text, unless it is reported by another employee or is flagged (ie "new career" or "porn" or "nude" etc). Also, he laughed when I mentioned the %35 rule and he confirmed that most companies use that standard and quite a few people a year are let go because of it.
Not that any of that matters anyways.....i'm sure someone can contort that to a completely different meaning

Is there an option to ban BHM from rChat only? He seems to mind his tongue in tech, and they don't seem to mind his tongue in sChat.

I'll not vote.
I'm not a fan of banning in general.
IMO, someone should have to seriously screw up...screw up HUGE...to get banned.
For example...the dude who posted pics of himself with his mexican hooker. Rightfully banned (although I don't recall if it was a life-time or temp banning).
Back when T Y L E R took an old steak knife to...well...those who were here will recall what he did and what he posted. Did he get banned for that? If he did, I don't think it was a permanent ban because, as I recall, he spent quite a bit of time here after that incident. That would've justified banning in my book.
I don't think BHM nor Noah were guilty of such behavior. As annoying as they might have been to some, we've had some over the top annoying people here before. They were essentially driven out for being the asshats that we all recognized them as being. These two guys? I don't think they qualify for being driven out or banned.
We all have choices in what we do and do not read. We all have the ability to systematically ignore those who annoy us. Why is it that people don't use the tools that are readily available?
Don't like the use of "foul" language? Block it -- the feature exists.
Avatars too suggestive for you? Turn them off -- the feature exists.
Certain forum members drive you up the wall? -- place them on your ignore list -- the feature exists.
Really guys...it's not that difficult to do. Control your own viewing pleasure.
But that's difficult isn't it -- Self-censorship?
Some people obviously have a very difficult time with it.
It's the "no, I don't want to switch it off" mentalility that's at work here...and it's really sad that it has to affect the rest of us.

Did unless someone is being a major trollish asshat.

I too, completely agree with Doug's post.
We are looking at this though, from a simple forum user's point of view where the only impact is on our enjoyment of the forum. Woody is forced to look at this from a business point of view. Personally he may or may not care about 35% avatars, vulgar language, beatdowns of asshats, etc., but if he views that type of behavior as detrimental to his business, regardless of whether or not it can be turned off/ignored/filtered, then he must make decisions based on that information. We should respect that or GYOF. I'm not trying to kiss up to Woody or defend his decisions, but I can understand them because my wife owns her own business and she has to make decisions for the good of the business that are annyoing and should be unnecessary. Usually centered around whiney/complaning/idiotic/etc. customers.
