80 series cargo net (group buy/build)

This thread started over on the 80s Tech page regarding a cargo net that I had my neighbor rig up for me. This is a lightweight setup of nylon to hang just behind the middle row of seats. The nylon strapping is "bar tacked" on a 4" grid spacing.

I'm not making anything on this, just thought I'd lend a hand getting some more of these made up if people want them. In fact I'm probably loosing a little $$ in the transactions

Anyway post here our PM me (some guys already have) if you are interested. Currently plan is to build a minimum of 5 and at that lot size he is charging $65 US including shipping.

The price will drop if 20 people are interested but I think that's unlikely.

Please be warned that these are not meant to restrain heavy items from crashing into passengers when in a roll over or MVA. Should work fine for light stuff like sleeping bags ect...

They wouldn't be available until mid to late August due to other projects in the queue so if you wanted for this summer's vacation... don't count on it.

Here's some pics:

Here's a shot of the lower strap to retain the bottom of the net. No real stress on this point so a nylon clasp is used. The clasp strap can stay attached to the rear set support arm even when not in use.

The top strap does have stress on it if gear is pushed to the front so a metal cinch clasp is used. An addtional strap runs up the middle row seat to keep it in position.

Is there a possibility of having all metal attachment hardware being used? Of course I'd be willing to pay any difference...

I'll ask the guy when he's back next week. He didn't opt for that because there really isn't any stress/force on those fasteners. Also the metal clasp is a little more awkward because of how the strapping slides into the fastener. If it gets frayed it would be a pain in ass.

Let me check, we should do them all the same to keep it simple.

Talking

Fantastic! I'm definitely in for one, regardless of the use of plastic or metal. I've just had some experience with the plastic buckles getting broken if a high-lift or tool kit gets slid or thrown on top of 'em. The metal cam buckles (Kayak tie downs) are much more sturdy for the long run from my experience. If the ends get frayed you can always cut a little off and re-seal the end with a match by slightly melting the end.

Personally, I think the idea is a fantastic one for my uses, as I already have the heavy stuff securely strapped down, and just need to keep backpacks and other relatively light gear from launching itself into the back seat!

I'm excited about the purchase!

I am in, I want one. Let me know how and when you need the funds. I second the all-metal clasps, if it's extra I do not mind.

Riley, I'm a definite maybe. I will go in if you need me to get to 5, or if you catch me on the right day when you confirm the order.

Ok so I've got at least 6 guys and maybe 7 or 8. Sounds like we should do the metal fasteners. You're guys models will end up being better than my prototype. :(

This guy in on vacation this week but will be back next week. I'll get an accurate price using the metal option. For now plan on $75 US with shipping. He should be able to make them in mid August.

When I get the exact details next week, I'll PM those interested.

Later.

I'd be interested in one with the metal fastener. I've got a metal cargo thingy but I think it only good for looks as it really doesnt wedge in tight enough to be secure. Count me in.

do all 80's have the cargo hooks in the bed? if so that would be a better place to attach the bottom of the net, the fwd two are just behind the rear seat

I did not see mine until I removed the carpet, the are hidden behing a slit in the carpet

I'll have to check mine. I've seen the rear ones but not the front ones. I agree if all 80's are fitted with this hook then that would likely be better. Maybe we can fit it so it works either way.

I store 2 big rubbermaid tubs behind the seats so these hooks might interfere with the tubs fitting tight. I'll check it out today. Oh good, I get to go play trucks.

My 93 has all four hooks, I think all 80 series have them.

I like the sound of this.

Riley - saw the thread where you posted about this. Great of you to play "middle-man" and help others here. It seems like a great setup, and the comments thus far will make it even better.

Could it be setup to behind the 3rd row, and maybe a bit over the top of it? I know, strange request, but I have 4 boys and a dog, so whenever we go somewhere, all the seats are in and used. But it woulc be nice to hook the bottom behind the third row and the top up where you have that one so small things like pillows could be stashed (for camping). The little guys (5 and 7) sit back there now. But I guess eventually they will outgrow that.

Hmmmmmmmm. I do like the idea. Count me in as a maybe. I need to go look at the truck and see what I want to do. I'll follow this thread and give you a firm answer shortly.

Thanks again for your efforts!!

It looks like it could also be used behind the first row of seats without any mods from the current design. Great flexibility. I am in.

OK cool if a 92 93 and 96 all have the hooks I would think all 80's do, the current design looks like it may work with the hooks already?

Stress puppy, maybe you can string the upper straps between the last handhold and 3rd row seatbelt lug, and the bottom at the aft set of hooks? You would not get much storage out of that but with the 3rd row in place any little bit you get for light stuff cloths, pillows sleeping bags etc is helpful,

You would be a good candidate for a off road trailer, it has a be tough to get 6 people a dog and their gear in an 80, I filled my 80 almost to the gills with 3 adults one kid and their gear for a 2 day camping trip last week

I'm sure we can make this work for the 3rd seats as well. This net is really just a "square" (or close to it) of net and 4 attach straps in the corners. The top corner straps have 2 straps to allow it to be positioned between 2 points (front and back). He did this to allow the net to be positioned / adjusted. The seat belt sounds like another rear attachment point.

I'll take some more pics tomorrow. No time today to even look for the tie-downs.

You are telling me!!!! I had the Yakima Megawarrior at (or probably above) capacity, and stuff behind the 3rd row to the ceiling (you know, close the hatch and stuff it from inside....), not to mention stuff jammed between the kids in the 3rd row, etc. It was tight!

Yes, a trailer is in the future. Or at least one of those things that goes in the trailer hitch and has a big flat area for some stuff. But we don't have anything yet and wanted to go. On the other hand, it teaches you to pack ONLY what is absolutely NECESSARY. No gadgets or the like. But it was a lot of fun (minus the rain) and the boys (I have 4) loved the wheeling.

BTW - go ahead and count me in for one of the nets. I am sure it will be useful in one of several ways!!

I'm in on this too. Riley I sent you a PM. Could use it by the end of the month, but when ever delivery is, it's cool with me. Looks like I'll get a lot of use out of it.

The guy building them is booked up with other products right now (plus he's on vacation). It will be in the last half of August until we would see the product.

I'll keep everyone posted either on this thread or via PM.

Later

legal issues

Bad news.... I had a long discussion with the chap that made my "cargo net" and he's worried about the liability issues with this "product". On his watercraft products that are shipping into the US, he turns over all his designs to the "dealer" and then simply becomes a contract manfacturer to avoid getting sued over any possible mishaps. He simply doesn't make enough money on this stuff to cover his insurance costs for a product like this.

I've been thinking about this issue myself (and have discussed with my cruiser friend and legal advisor as well). I think considering the discussions about the safety of this product when heavy items are stored in the rear, we can all agree that passengers would be at risk in an accident or off-roading mishap.

I hate to kill this idea but I'm not sure what to do here. I've been doing my summer reading of "King of Torts" by John Grisham and man it's turned me off setting myself up for liability.

This guy is now pretty reluctant to build these.

Riley
