Any flashlight nuts on here besides Cary and I - cheap bright LED

Flashlights are a hobby of mine and lo and behold there's a forum for that, too. There's a really cheap flashlight by RayOVac (I know, I know - zero snob factor) that's a new 3C cell Cree LED available that puts out 150 Lumens for $25 and does so for hours. For comparison, a 2 D mag light with fresh batteries puts out 45 and dies in a couple hours. Up until this week, you had to pay over $100 to get a light that puts out 150 lumens or more so this is quite a sea change and when word gets out these will be snapped up.

The light has been only available in Meijers stores in Michigan so far, though WalMarts are supposed to have them weeks ago. None of them do, so there must have been a change in plans. Anyhow, this insanely cheap bright light might be of interest to some of you and someone found out how to buy it straight from ROV's customer service line for $33 shipped even though it's not available on their website. You can see it on their site, but not buy it there - it's called the Sportsman Extreme 4 watt LED. Check it out, but ignore the 3 watt AA.

I have one in each Cruiser as of last week via FedEx and my brother who lives near a Meijers.

Here's how to get one:

Call here
Rayovac Consumer Service 1-800-237-7000

and ask for SE4W3C. The Consumer Service folks are already commenting to flashlight nuts that they're experiencing a run on them today.

Just an FYI for the Cruiser heads.... No affiliation, blah blah.

Good going, now you are going to create a few more nuts. For me it all ended when I bought the McLux PD.

LOL

The first link that showed up on google when I put this "Sportsman Extreme 4 watt LED" was this:

You are a nut.. Thank you for the tip.

BTW we already have a flashlight geek thread, which is useful at least for identifying the other flashlight geeks:

when I was camping recently, couldn't help but love my LED headlamps and flashlights for stuff around the camp. However, when it came to projecting a tight bright beam 100 yds away to check out for bears and such, had to go back to incandescents. LEDs just didn't cut it. No idea what intensity all those had. Was resigned to the dichotomy of long duration LEDs vs bright incandescent.

Can yours do bright tight beam?

This is no ordinary LED flashlight. It's not those little 5mm nubbins that are in your headlamp. It's a 4W Cree emitter that is almost too bright. It will give you the throw you want almost for sure.

e999,

Yeah, it has good 'throw' meaning it will put lumens well out there vs previous LEDs. It easily outthrows my 2 and 3 D Mag lights at their tightest. A couple nights ago, I lit up a 20" tall owl in a 100 foot tree that was 150 feet from me well enough that my entire family could examine him. It was impressive, until I grabbed the 15 million candlepower boat spot light which lit up every detail. Of course the boat light is 2 feet long and weighs about 12 pounds...

Doug,

What do you think of Maglite's LED bulb replacement. I got one and was very pleased. How does the Rayovac compare to it?

Regards

Alvaro

Not so fast everyone. I read that the EPA and the FDA will be limiting the candlepower for type 2 light emitting devices to 100 lumens. Apparently there have been a few folks burning their eyes out with this light.

Saw it on the Today show this morning.

Alvaro,

Was that a three-cell LED replacement in your Maglite?

Great, just got of the horn. Ordered 2. One for me and one for my buddy getting married in CO. Guess I'll have ship it to him rather than fly with it and wrap it with a warning lable

This blows the MagLite LEDs away. Not even close. As usual, Mag is about two generations behind in technology.

And since when does the EPA and/or FDA regulate consumer flashlights?

If the EPA, etc bans this light, it will be sold out in 24 hours. Unlikely, as there are literally hundreds of expensive LED flashlights well over 100 lumens, which law enforcement uses and they're also available to the public.

And the poor owl is now as blind as ray charles in a dark room... It also cant sleep, because its body clock is all screwed up, it thinks that its daylight all the time now, due to the big lightspots that have been permenantly etched in his retina's

Alright you light nerds, I want a better LED pocket light than my MAC tools $30 (with a dull jacknife) single LED 3 AAA battery unit. What do I get? I'm a service manager at a truck dealer. I carry a light every where I go and this one is heavy, doesn't have a decent belt holder. So, light, belt holder, durable and waterproof, bright and cheaper than $30.

Ultrafire EMR1 with the Rebel LED - I think it's actually $37 shipped. Oh, and give up on the AAA - convert to CR123 and get yourself some rechargeables. If you MUST go AAA, I'm sure Fenix makes one that will be OK (www.fenix-store.com).

** Battery Note: Ultrafire does not recommend the use of a 3.6V rechargeable CR123A battery with this flashlight. It can potentially cause permanent damage to the driver. Use a 3.0V primary or rechargeable battery instead.

What gives? Is this battery advice a larger cost? One of my techs had this light. It might last for me but it wasn't durable enough to live with him for a month. That is one thing I can give to my MAC (obviously not made by them) it has been through hell and back. Even the wash machine.
