Flew one way and drove 1100 miles to get my cruiser, and drove 2200 miles roundtrip in three days to get my boat. It's an experience and I would do it again. enjoy!

i'm not sure if you're a snow sports person, but mammoth mountain is accessed from 395. mammoth is the most likely destination for skiiers from the LA area so it's actually a pretty nice road if not well populated.

395 sounds nice I'll look into it...I'll probably pass on Death Valley, 15 from barstow to vegas would be fine.....
how much slower do you think it will it be than I5?

i haven't the slightest idea.
i'd plan on 4-5 hours. i think the real killer will be donner pass on I80, that thing is a motherfukker in my 62. just take it slow and hang out with the 18wheelers

I would do 95 south from Reno.
Donner pass is not horrible if your 60 is running well. My 40 used to do it all the time at 70..
Actually, I would head across 50 to Utah. Neat country and a LOT cooler than through Vegas.

I shoulda mentioned Cadillac Ranch on Route 66 in my previous post. My wife's been there and thought it was cool, and she wasn't into cars at the time. (Not that she is now, but at least she appreciates them now)

Sounds like fun. There is a lot of neat places you can visit on the way back and a lot good eat'n hole in wall places to eat at. I like those trips.
I flew to pheniox to pick up a fj40 once and practically froze to death on the way back. The cruiser's doors were dry rotted and all the cold air came inside. I should of pull over and bought some masking tape but did not think about it until the next day.
Yeah I would ship the guy a ps pump, some spare electrical parts and possibly an old radio and hold them until you get there.

Good luck, you are gonna love it. I drove a 55 from Rapid City to Atlanta and enjoyed it a great deal, no power steering, in the dead of winter .

You've got a place to stay in ABQ if you need it. I just PM'ed you my phone number. If you need anything (help, food, water, tools, fluids, etc.), I'd be happy to bring it to where you were....
Sounds like a blast of a trip.
Have fun.

When you are from Trinidad to Pueblo in CO on I-25 the puts you like 2hrs away from me... I can PM you my cell phone number, but 2hrs is a mightly long ways to wait for help. Specially considering that its not exactly desolate. When you hit CO springs there is a TLCA chapter there I think, and then the Rising Sun in Denver so you will be covered for CO.

i'd cut across to reno in sacramento on I80, then south along the east side of the sierras on 395. you can pass mono lake, which is pretty neato and stop at the gas station just outisde of Yosemite in lee vining. it is at the intersection of 120 and 395, it has rediculously good food, seriously. continue south and pick a place to cut over into nevada and you'll come into las vegas from the north on 95. you could cut through on 190 into death valley... but that might literally be suicide depending on your rig.
however, since this is an unkonwn rig, taking 395 all the way south to 58 east to barstow with all the other vegas hopefulls is probably the wise choice, as the other crossovers are rather desolate.
edit
if you do take I5, be sure to head east ASAP. if you've never driven through LA traffic jsut trust me it's something to be avoided
|
Exactly what I was going to say..........excellent recommendation.
My only other suggestion...............if you go 395, stop at the Schotts Bakery in Bishop, there is also one in Mammoth Lakes. Perfect place to stock up on more yummy food.

From Las Vegas, NV to Pueblo, CO is all up hill. Make sure you have fuel and water for the radiator.
If you went from Pueblo to Las Vegas you could do it on a 1/2 tank of fuel.

Flagstaff to Albq is downhill, Albq through CO is uphill...

another possible route change...
instead of through albuquerque, continue north from the grand canyon and drive though monument valley and moab. It actually is shorter, but adds about 1.5 hrs to the trip...what do you think?
