No power steering because the belt was routed off of it when the it's leaking locked the smog pump and smoked the belt off of it.
That's fairly routine for a 60.

Maybe it's my old fashioned ideas, or maybe I've seen Cars too many times, but if I were making the drive I'd be sure to drive Route 66. You may never have a chance to do it again. You can check out the website " The Mother Road" and get directions since it's not on the maps anymore. Could see some interesting scenery, and meet some interesting folks. (if you haven't seen it, rent Cars and watch the extra footage for an idea of what you'd see)
Also, if you're going that close to Kentucky, might as well head towards the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and maybe they'll let you get drunk on their dime.. Again, that's just me. If you do that, the Original KFC is located in Corbin, KY, and you can add grease to the bourbon...
Oh, and if you stop in KCMO, my sister-in-law just graduated from college there, so we might be able to at least hook you up with good local eats/watering hole.
I'm interested to see where you go...

Vegas has been over 100 for a couple weeks now, and should stay there through the end of September. It'll be a hot ride through the desert if you come through this way...hope the cooling system is up to snuff!

He can come practice by driving my 55 around with all the stuff in it, it probably has 5-700lbs of extra weight few days of that he'll be ready for that 60.

Clearly, many people don't see this as the vacation oportunity it is. I'd have no reservations doing a trip like this as long as I could move the finish date if something went sideways on the road.
I once bought a 69 Mercury from a farmer for a buck and left the next day on a 3000mile round trip. I got 2/3 of the way though it before I noticed one of the sparkplugs was broken clean off. Take just enough tools to keep you going but not so many that you can't abandon the rig and hitchhike.

That's what I did. Flew down to Tucson and picked up my 60 and drove it home.
It was a great road trip and I didn't have single issue.
Have fun. I'm jealous. Would love to do it again.
Maybe I'll get a 40 next...

Having the pump seize would suck. At least pull the belt.
Dallas to Austin sitting still on the highway with the windows down was a really long couple of hours. Even moving was not a lot of fun.
here's a visual to fill your thoughts as your driving over the rockies - A 2f crank with four main bearings, every other rod journal, flexes at high RPM and high load conditions. The crank distorts as it flexes back and forth.
Try to keep that out of your mind as you drive 3300 miles with no radio
How's that for a mind fawk?

I would suggest heading over to lake tahoe then down to big bear...don't forget to get some spare gas cans...their is sometimes gas stations few and far between on some of the scenic routes.

that looooooon straight strech down the middle of califunnia is I5. it is booooooooooring. and when i say boring i mean "please, shoot me" kind of boring.
i'd cut across to reno in sacramento on I80, then south along the east side of the sierras on 395. you can pass mono lake, which is pretty neato and stop at the gas station just outisde of Yosemite in lee vining. it is at the intersection of 120 and 395, it has rediculously good food, seriously. continue south and pick a place to cut over into nevada and you'll come into las vegas from the north on 95. you could cut through on 190 into death valley... but that might literally be suicide depending on your rig.
however, since this is an unkonwn rig, taking 395 all the way south to 58 east to barstow with all the other vegas hopefulls is probably the wise choice, as the other crossovers are rather desolate.
edit
if you do take I5, be sure to head east ASAP. if you've never driven through LA traffic jsut trust me it's something to be avoided

I'd be willing to bet that stretch would be like rolling in the back of an RV hopped up on speed, coke, and Jack Daniel's, with hookers on your lap listening to Rave music, compared to traveling through Kansas on I70 in a 20 year old Land Cruiser fighting wind with no PS and dodging tumbleweed.

yep
The trip through Kansas really blows though. I honestly think the only other thing more frustrating/boring is sitting through the SATs with a hangover.

Dumbass.
Sitting around in a church with a hangover for 4 hours waiting on your buddy to get married, kinda sucks too. That was my last Saturday.

I thought about 395/95 to vegas, is it as rural as it looks? I figured for the first couple hundred miles it'd be best to stay near civilization but if there are decent size towns every couple hundred miles then I'll consider it...

if you stay on 395 you'll be fine.
if you decide to cross over to 95 at least bring a full gas can. when i did it, on a motorcycle, the concern was my small tank. the longest span between gas was from big pine to beatty NV which is about 140 miles. from big pine to 95 i think there were 5 cars going the other way and nothing resembling civilization... yeah, take 395. in my experience anything big enough to get named on google maps will have people and services.
i'm not sure if you're a snow sports person, but mammoth mountain is accessed from 395. mammoth is the most likely destination for skiiers from the LA area so it's actually a pretty nice road if not well populated.
