| PCMCIA slot problem... The PCMCIA slot on my Dell 600m has given up the ghost...apparrently, bouncing around the East coast for the past few months has junked...or so it appears...
I rely on the port for my broadband access with my Kyocera KPC650 1xEVDO card. The card lights up when installed in other laptops, so I don't expect that it's the issue.
Is there some sort of testing I can do to check the slot functionality, or should I just assume it's bad and replace it?
I've got a replacement ordered (found on EBAY for $14ish) but it won't be here for another week, and I'll be on the road again at that point...not having the broadband is driving me nuts, quickly....

| You could get a cable and plug in directly, unless you only get on at wireless access points.

| Woody,
Get a USB WiFi adapter.
Amazon has a large selection. Just be careful not to bend the adapter while plugged into the laptop.

| I don't know anything about laptop repair but if you go into 'device manager', double click on the device (does it show up?), what does it say? Could the driver have become corrupted?
Laptop still under warranty? Is opening the laptop going to void the warranty? Have you opened the laptop up to see if the slot has become disconnected?
You pay your broadband bill?
usb wifi & stealing free wireless or paying for t-mobile at starbucks sound like safe options

Good advice, also if there is no apparent problem in device manager, try uninstalling it and then re-loading the driver, if this doesnt fix it you can try the repair option if you you go into network neighborhood and right click on that connection.
Actually i would do the repair option first.

| hehehe...even if the broadband bill wasn't paid, the card should power up
just uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, the slot re-loaded the drivers, and still doesn't work...damn....
computer is WAY outta warrantee....and up for replacement late this year too...
and no, I tried relying on hotels....the broadband is WAY more reliable...plus I'm frequently not able to run off for a few hours to search out a free hotspot...
any other idears?

I do know I can use my Cell phone for it...have the cable already...will be setting that up today for a temp solution, but still prefer the KPC650 setup...

| You can get pcmcia to usb adapters, but they are pricey ($150-200). What about getting a new EVDO card with a USB interface?

| I've never seen an EvDO card in USB interface before. I did evaluate a prototype of a cell phone/PC Card docking device acted as a gateway/converter between EvDO and Wifi.

| Sprint has two USB models. A PC Express version is also available.

| Woody - if you had a Sierra card I could you a bit better: www.sierrawireless.com
Anyway I'll help you with the competition's card (no wait, call their tech support, no wait, they don't have any...)
Anyway, here goes: so when it's inserted, does the hardware device manager show the yellow bang!! on the device driver?
Reason why I ask is, the slot will power the card for a second and then if the driver does not load correctly, the slot will power down (I think). i know you reloaded drivers but sometimes that really doesn't fully flush them out (wacky Windows). Let me know what you find in device manager...I'll ask our driver expert tomorrow how best to deal with that condition.
The USB modem (available for EVDO networks) is another way to go. If you let me know what network (Verizon or Sprint), perhaps I can help you out.

| Alltel, actually....
No "yellow bang" at any time...the slot itself is most likely junked....I've got a new one arriving next week....will install over the 4th of July week, when I'm home next...
it's been working for months.....
