| Another attempted Home invasion. Background: My mom flew in for my son's 2nd birthday, so we let her sleep up-stairs in the 'big bed' and the wifey and I were sleeping downstairs on the 'guest bed'. Also, we live in a very 'safe' rural city. People very often leave houses and cars unlocked at all times.
This morning, at approx 4:20 am CST some ass hat tried to break in. It's been hot here, so we had the windows open, and he was trying to pry the screen out of the window frame. The wifey heard him first said to "GTFOH" and he still stood there looking in like a dumb fock. I promptly chimed in with threats to stick a firearm of my choosing in his face and he took off. (an empty threat really as all the firepow'r was upstairs and we were down stairs, but not empty anymore!).
This was/is not an isolated incident. There have been a number of attempted and actual burglaries in my neighborhood in the past 4 months. We've heard about this guy before from our neighbors. Always gets away. This morning he made his get a way on a bicycle.
The focker was standing in my elevated flower bed trying to come in the damn window. I'm so pissed off.
I'm pissed at myself for leaving my fire arm of choice so far away from where I was sleeping, and pissed I didn't get a better look at the guy. " Baseball cap and dark colored hooded sweatshirt" was the best I could do.
Anyway, no more sleep tonight!
On the up side, it's probably a good thing that I didn't have the capacities of an armed citizen at the time. Cause right now I'd have a lot of 'splainin to do' to the men in blue. Seriously. As it was I nearly went through the screen myself after I saw him. I'm not sure I would have given him a warning. Some guy comes prying at your window screen and you see how you feel about gun control.
And that would have ruined my flower bed too.
So folks, as a friendly reminder- no lower floor windows open that a man can fit through, K? Lock your doors. Lock your cars. (Dude had his bike parked by the side of the house where the cars were parked, ostensibly to keep a low-pro). Foster a pit bull. Marry a light sleeper. Living in a 'safe' place doesn't mean chit.
PS, don't come over for a visit in the middle of the night anytime soon.

| Could you tell, was it a punk kid? We have the same rural "security" as you. Huge growing Meth problem around here. Be careful, someone that stupid is stupid enough to come back. Then give him enough line to get in.

| I don't believe in warning shots. If someone were to get caught trying to break into my home (or my folks' home if I'm staying with them), that's a perceived threat in my book, and they're going bye-bye.

No way would I let him get IN the house. I wouldn't need too, the law is clearly on my side here. One good thing about rural Iowa. All I need is a perceived threat to my life.
Anyway, still kind of freaked out. Time to grab a cup o coffee and put the shotgub away.

| he's from in or around the neighborhood, they'll stay close to home so they can get back there quick, the bike seals it. Maybe somebody's idiot brother living in the garage.

| Glad you're all O.K. Doc. Hopefully there's not another time, but IF there is remember to conserve ammo, One Shot, One Kill!

| You know what would have been ideal for this situation? Pepper gas.
A face full of that and that fucker a) would be in jail right now b) you wouldn't be having to explain to the police why you took a guys head clean off with a shotgun and c) I don't care who you think you are, you're going to be psychologically effected by killing someone - so you don't have to deal with that.
I tell ya, the guy who invents a pistol-like device that fires some sort of liquid or electrical stun charge of some sort (without a bunch of wires and crap following) would be the winner.
I'd be pissed too, Doc. I've got a friend who's house has been broken into twice in the last year. Both times he was home. the first time was a bit of a surprise to them, but the second time he knew it was coming and was actually on the phone with the police when the dumbass kicked in the door. It sucks.
I'll keep you in my thoughts. I know it's nerve-wracking.

| I'm just glad you are OK.
I have to admit it would be very nerve racking, I woulda had a hard time not going out the back and coming around, even if that isn't the smart thing.
Years ago a kid was trying to get into my truck and I went out the back, leveled (over the top of a fence) a 20 gauge about 3 feet from the back of his head, and said "boo".
I think the cop was kinda pissed at me because of the shit and piss he had to smell on the way to the klink.
I do like Swank's idea, only thing it is hard enough to get that close if you don't know he is armed, and I would want to bring a gun if the perp had decided it was going to be a gunfight

| 1. Nobody has ever snuck up on anybody with a good watchdog.
2. Motion sensing lights on each corner of your house (full coverage) work miracles.
3. The sound of a round being chambered in a pump action shotgun should make anyone with an IQ above room temperature crawl backwards through the window they just came in.
4. Somebody that ignores 1, 2 and 3 is a crack addled meth head and deserves to be shot.
Happy Hunting.

I consider that an attempted burglary... The crimes labled "home invasion" around hear consist of kicking down the front door and the home owner getting shot. Glad you thwarted it though!
