Americans build disposable vehicles. You are supposed to do your patriotic duty to keep the system intact! How else are they support the 5 Manager to 1 Employee ratio? Duh....

the idea is to make more money after they sell the vehicle, and to build disposable vehicles that need to have a ton of maintenance after warranty, and then die soon after. That way you got to by another one so they can make the money again.
That is how the automakers are making there money in N.A. and it really isnt about the best product or being enviromentally considerate, just about $$$. Although it does help to have an enviromentaly friendly or reliable image, evidence is to the contrary.

right. its all about planned obsolesence.

it does work for them.
but look at toyota. been building high quality reliable vehicles desinged to last forever. they have done this for 50 years or more.

now toyota is one of the top manufactures. just like D'Animal said a bout kia/hyundai.
they make quality products that live for a along time. people dont buy another one, cause thier last one broke down, they buy another one cause they couldnt kill it.

and for the record, kia/hyundai is not as high quality as toyota.

It's weird, hey?

With the exception of a few European cars and one YJ that fell into my lap, I've owned Japanese cars for about 20 years. And by and large I've driven them into the ground. The shortest term I've owned a Toyota was 5 years, and when I bought it it was already ten years old. They guy I sold it to is still driving it, a decade later.

I had a Celica I bought at a repo sale for three figures, and figured I'd get a couple of months out of it. It had 400,000kms on it, and I didn't change the oil for over a year. It never failed me.

If North American cars lasted as long as the Asian ones, the industry would implote in a matter of weeks.

I have a lot of confidence in the koreans catching up, I bought a POS pontiac lemans, (Daewoo) for $500 when my golf died a week before moving halfway across the country, figured it would probably get me where I was going, ended up driving it there, parked it for a year, then put in a new battery, drove it the rest of the way across canada, daily driver for another three years.
so now I have purchased a new kia, and no complaints so far, it is everything I expect from a basic japanese compact vehicle, with a lower price.

I know the early Kias had some safety issues; a couple of them didn't even pass the Canadian safety testing.

I imagine they've improved since then, though. That's what Asian manufacturers do; they examine their mistakes and improve upon them instead of ignoring them or just adding more cup holders and built-in child seats so nobody notices plastic gears in the trannies, and engines that last for 90K miles.
