| Nature v.s. Nuture? So, what do you think? Does a persons genetic makeup predispose them to do certain things, act a certain way, even enjoy one type of thing more than another? Or, is it all in how you were brought up- parents being the biggest influence on your thoughts, actions, words?
This does have a point... so bear with me for a bit.
I'm not talking about predispositions to have high cholesterol or blonde hair, or a third nipple.
At it's most basic level the question is does your genetic make up make you a "ford" guy or a "chevy" guy? Fish or Beef? Mcdonalds or Burger King? Is it possiable?

| In your example I believe it is nurture that makes you a Toyota guy who likes red meat and humping hot blonds. |

I have two other siblings.
My oldest sister was on the HS Tennis Team (could have gone pro is she wanted to and my mom is damn good at tennis too), but she dropped out of HS and ran away with her bf (like my mom). I think the bf influenced by sis to go live a 'different life' but its also kinda funny that my mom did the same thing.
As for me and my younger bro... I'm getting my business management degree at the University of North Florida and my by bro is in his first year over at Florida State University. We'll be the first in our family to get degree's in college.

| I wouldn't say idiocy is genetic... actually I feel that if the parents are stupid, its not because of genes, but because they are too stupid to raise a child correctly, hence the stupidity is passed on. Since there is no one to teach that person right from wrong, they never learn the correct ways to do things and they only think about themselves because the simply emulate what they see on a daily basis. That being said, IH8Stupid

| I think that you will develop an emotional disposition based on your upbringing, i.e., nervousness, anger, etc. It will determine how you respond to certain situations or events. I've found that out.

| I'd say idiocy is both inherited and learned.
The environmentally influenced "learning" part further compounds this problem.
Parents aren't the only idiots influencing their kids. |

| Yes, but the natural idiots have a selective advantage.

| I think you guys are missing the point of "nature". You seem to assume that because parents are aggressive (for example), nature says that they'll pass their aggressive traits to their children. Maybe so, but they may also pass other, unexpressed traits instead, like shyness.
So the correct "nature" inquiry would be the set of traits that the unique offspring has at birth. Can those be changed? Not likely in my opinion. Propensity for addiction, consistently choosing crazy significant others, intelligence, etc. Think about it -- you know these people: They're always asking for advice and never taking it. But can their "nature" be trained and put to good use? Likely. For instance, take the aggressive trait: it can be tailored to a successful career in sales or the like. On the other hand, it could land you in jail.
So I say it's a shitload more nature than nurture. Meh. |

More Nature than we'd like to admit, but nurture definitely plays a role.

example#1- my dad always drove GM cars, since my personality tended to always resist my parents rules (LOL) i bought Fords & Toyotas and got a kick outta parking them in my pops driveway...he didn't enjoy the oil leaks
example#2- spanking you kids. my dad whipped my butt, yes i was scared stiff of the man when he was mad. but, i did what he asked when he asked. i respected my parents even tho i didn't always agree. |
