| Home alarm systems? Thinking about a home alarm system- something to hopefully scare away someone breaking in while we're not home.
Anyone use a 'do-it-yourself' kit? Bad idea?
Pay a professional, monitoring service?
Give me some feed back.
TIA!

Some good info here on installing a kit, but how about those professionally installed systems / monitoring services?

| If you get a monitoring system, it will save you some cash on your insurance. -- but all you need is an audible alarm to scare people away.

Not even close, maybe a months worth. That said, I have a Brinks monitored alarm. They have been fine over the last 9 years.

| Another HUGE plus to a home monitoring system is FIRE/SMOKE detection. I think I freak out more about this then anything else. And with my wife's cooking, its an insurance policy as well.

| Well, the new house was prewired and the install was free. I think it costs $25 per month for the monitoring? Money well spent.

We do the same, we have 2 small dogs, our kids, and until they can call the fire department were protected for smoke and CO2. Im in the biz so monitoring is about $5 per month. I have a wireless system so adding protection is a snap.
For the most part folks will stay out of yer pad if a dog is making some noise. It has always worked for me in the past. Motion lights are also very helpful......Keeps the neighbor kids from taking beer from my garage.....

| I use a bunch of X10 stuff, if you get a reasonable base you can expand as much as you want. Lots of neat stuff, as little or as much as you want. Just remotely controlling lights in the house is worth it.
