| Canoe Restoration / Paint Anyone ever painted a royalex canoe? From what I can find, royalex has a vinyl top layer to protect it from UV. I'm fixing up / restoring an old town penobscot that has some areas on the hull where the color is faded away to a brown underneath. Any experience with paint / application / durability?
So far, I've webed my own seats and replaced / refinished all the wood as needed.

| Seen it done, but not very good results, but probably wasn't the correct paint.
Have you tried to contact Old Town and see what they recommend. They're pretty helpful.

| It seems like it would be very difficult to find a paint that is waterproof, flexible, UV resistant, and scratch resistant. Keep in mind that it will add weight to your canoe as well.
I thought about doing the same thing once, but stuck with my faded hull...

| I've never heard of anyone successfully restoring the finish on one of those. x2 on the suggestion of calling the manufacturer, and possibly the producer of the raw Royalex material.

| hohoho...AS a matter aof fact I havn't refinished a royalex boat with broken hoickey sticks but you have def. got me thinking....I'd paint or fill deep scratches with epoxy or royalex paint (as said contact the manufacturers) as for painting an entire hull? Hmm...I'm thinking that's not going to come out so well...I'm a big fan of 303 protectorant as well....Lets see some pics of the wood work and web you've done...Good on you you for fixing up a (any!) canoe!!
Did you re web with cane? Every seat I've redone I've always swicthed to seat belt type webbing...my projects are never restorations though...I don';t have it in me..I do repairs and renovations.....I've re-railed a couple of boats re-seated a few bpoats, bult a cedar strippe guideboat and genrally refurbished or repaird a few othe boats but I've never tried to repaint an entire royalex hull...Good luck and lets see some pics and/or hear about the results!! |

| My mind is starting to wrap itself around the idea of not painting it. What the heck, it's a canoe and it's gonna get roughed up. That's why I put the kevlar skid plates on for anyway. I'll snap some pics tomorrow when the sun is up. I webbed my seats with blue 1" tubular climbing webbing from REI at $0.32 a foot. They turned out awesome.

| There are special primers and additives for automotive paint to paint those polymer bumpers on cars now days. I have no idea what Royalex is made from, but I suspect it is some form of polyethylene.
GL
And we need pics.
