Help me out
Here is my problem, It is extremely possible i will be selling my mini-truck this afternoon. I will be getting $2000 dollars cash for it.
That money is to go to buy me a 40 series. I Know you all are saying that for 2K its not going to be a good one.....well thats fine, thats not what i am asking about. Here is what i am asking about.
Option 1) I take the 2K and buy halfshaft5's 62 Land Cruiser. The body is in pretty good shape(accounting for some bondo). The motor runs(he started it this weekend again without any smoke or bad signs. The clutch needs bled, needs a radiator, gas tank, headlights(with buckets), and it needs brakes with lines. I figure to replace the needs correctly will cost upwards of 2K which won't be too bad since i will be building on a solid cruiser.
Option 2) there is a local cruiser that is in no way in as good of body or mechanical shape, but the asking price is 900 and i can probably get it for 700. That would give me 1100-1300 dollars cash that i could dump in it immediatly. This truck has a rough top, needs seats recovered, probably needs a minor tune up(plugs, fluids, carb cleaned etc) to get running and ready for the road.
So what do you guys think....go for the better cruiser for 2k but have no money to work on it for a while or go with the lesser of the two but have money to dump into it immediatly(i even have the 's permission) Thanks
I'll post links to both cruisers,

I would go for #1 if you have time #2 could eat up that $1100. in about 10 minutes. IMHO

Option number 1 looks like it would get my vote. Number 2 looks like a money pit. I am past 2K on parts on a mild resto on a very solid cruiser. It all depends on want you want in the end.

Yup. Don't buy the money pit. $1100 won't even get you started.

I agree with everyone here - in general, get the best body you can afford. Everything mechanical you can do ... body work = expensive (even if it's just buying the tools to do yourself).

Just a thought if you go option #1

thanks for all the advice guys, I am still looking forward to more though....
A few of my thoughts and maybe you can tell me if I'm mis-guided.
-truck #1 looks solid and from my conversation with Micheal it is solid minus some bad bondo. And it runs.
-truck #1 needs a radiator, headlight buckets, gastank, and brakes. Almost every part i can source from MUD but it will take money and more than likely i won't have enough for a while.
-truck #2 is rusty but the frame is in great(when i say great i mean surface rust only) and from what i can tell a quick tune up will make it run. This truck was on the road about 3 to 4 years ago.
-truck #2 has a top, rough, but it does have a top.
I am split between the two. Neither is perfect....

Solid and bad bondo do not go hand in hand...
Pass on both.
They are all money pits....not just these two.
Take your 2K and purchase a CD with it and wait.....save your cash and get something decent.
Chat.

Gamble I'd say, but if you wanted a soft top DD go w/ number 1. The $1300 you'd have to work on it will go immediately. I would say #1 due to collectability and knowledge that it is from a good owner.

good points, Halfshaft seems to be a great owner and i had a good conversation with him on the phone the other day, The other truck he been owned by good owners too though. Been in the same area all its life and my FIL knows everyone that has owned it. So really a draw there.

Have you ever driven a 40 for any length of time (not talking about a 15 minute test drive)? Especially an older one (drum brakes, no p/s, etc.)? IMO, to get either of those into DD condition is going to take far more money than you're talking about here.
If I had to choose, #1.
