Appeal to Supporters of Venezuela's democracy

This letter was sent to me by a friend.
There's elections tomorrow. A lot is riding on them. Venezuela deserves better.

Thanks

Alvaro

Appeal to Supporters of Venezuela's democracy
By Aleksander Boyd

Caracas 01.12.06 | "There's going to be a coup... Chavez won't accept defeat... Chavez's militias will attack us if we try to defend the vote... You better get food stocks for there's going to be a bloodshed... The fix is in..." These are some of the rumours I have heard in the last few days. Sadly these are repeated a million times by opposition folks that, perhaps unknowingly and unable to overcome their fears, act as a resonance box of the inanity coming from the official camp. Days ago I was arguing that Manuel Rosales is the underdog in this electoral race. It follows that the millions of Venezuelans supportive of Rosales' bid stand on an equal footing. Our commitment to rescue Venezuela's democracy is despised in many foreign news rooms, policy desks and governmental departments. Newsworthy items, such as Chavez's rejection of accepting the presence of a multipartisan senatorial commission of observers from Spain -critical of his regime in past legislative elections-, went unnoticed.

Please note the circled hand. Picture from El Nacional

Homeless Venezuelans nailing their hands to a tree in protest to the caudillo's pathetic performance vis-a-vis housing solutions for the poor did not qualify either. See such human tragedies are non-events for Reuters, AP et al. Recently BBC's Greg Morsbach called to ask me whether I knew any disgruntled chavista. I told him that he could find them by the truckload camping outside the housing office in El Rosal or, closer to his office located in El Paraiso, in Cota 905 where they were allowed to invade parcels of land only to live in subhuman conditions on a hillside. Has anyone seen Morsbach report on that?

In any case this is just a brief note to those that would like to see democracy flourishing again in Venezuela. An appeal to simpathetic bloggers, media, governments and individuals. The choice is rather simple. What we are facing on Sunday is a plural democratic option on one side and a single party, indefinite presidency, absolute control of the state, centralized government, oppression, militarism, terrorism, human rights violations, violence and instability on the other. It's a no brainer really. That is why I do believe that Rosales will win. But we need help in the form of getting the message out.

Of the many scenarios the one I consider the most likely is: Rosales wins, Chavez refuses to accept defeat, orders his militias to attack, the military react -as they did on 11 April 2002-, force Chavez to accept results and after much tension and perhaps some deaths Rosales is proclaimed Venezuela's president. However there's a crucial aspect about this view, which is people power or the involvement of the millions of Venezuelans that have been marching alongside Rosales for the last three months. Every Venezuelan committed to the country's future and democracy, on both sides of the divide, must get involved in the process of ensuring that votes are properly counted and tallies' results correspond to number of receipts deposited in ballots. If this process is carried out in orderly fashion, respecting electoral norms and legislation there should not be problems. And if it turns out that the will of the majority favours Chavez, so be it. This country can not evolve in such polarized condition. This country must overcome Chavez, the hatred, class conflicts and divisions planted by him. Venezuela needs the positive input of every Venezuelan to become a great nation. We have the chance, just around the corner. To waste another opportunity, in less than a decade, would be terribly sad.

However it would be foolish to think that Chavez, having so many issues for which he has to be made accountable, will go without a fight. Venezuela heard him ordering the Avila Plan in 2002; Venezuela saw him commanding a coup d'etat in 1992. That's how he reacts, that's how militaristic caudillos react, by violent means. He's no democrat for no democrat can claim that him and only him is capable of running a country. No democrat thinks wise to have a single party. No democrat models his ideals and policies on failed and repressive communist dictators. No democrat mocks and disrespects the less educated. No democrat states "L'État, c'est moi." No democrat seeks to obliterate opposition parties. No democrat demands of people to live in subhuman conditions for revolutions' sake. No democrat leads coups d'etat. No democrat uses tanks to protest.

Hence dear freedom fighters, be on your guard, give democracy a chance for we all stand to benefit from it.

My brother in law was living in Venezuela a few years back when Chavez was trying to instigate a coup. My brother in law was walking through the jungle one day and ran into a Marine Corp squad on a goat trail, they were in town to keep track of, er, stuff..... Anyway, after he identified himself, they told him that as an American, he could get a helo trip out if crap hit the fan. Just walk down the goat trail in the jungle and we'll know you are there....

Chavez sees himself as the next Castro, but with more money, oil resources, and political allies in Iran, Korea, and other US hating countries. He is a classic dictator from the old school mold. He may loose the election, but he will not loose the presidency.

maybe he sucks. but the reason he's so appealing is because if our companies were left in charge, they'ed bleed the place dry and leave the locals with dirt to eat. we've been two faced with our promices for free markets and democracy for years when it comes to latin america. we reap what we sow.

Today's news

I got this from:

http://www.isn.ethz.ch/

Chavez’s cloak of democracy
Venezuelan voters elect Chavez for another six terms, and as long as elections seem relatively free and fair, he will likely remain in power well beyond 2012.

Commentary by Sam Logan for ISN Security Watch (04/12/2006)

By late in the evening on 3 December, Venezuela’s National Electoral Council announced that with 73 percent of the votes counted, Hugo Chavez held some 61.35 percent, while opposition leader Manuel Rosales held some 38.39 percent.

As Chavez stood before a crowd of supporters from the “victory balcony” at the president’s Miraflores Palace, Rosales conceded defeat in an act of political prudence that showed integrity even as it stole momentum from the opposition’s plans to protest the election results.

On 4 December, Venezuela’s opposition seemed complacent, accepting the election results. Rosales has pledged to work through grassroots systems to build support for the opposition from the ground up. Many of his supporters are likely to work with Rosales to build a solid base over the next six years. Yet, other Venezuelans in the opposition feel an utter loss.

Long before Chavez won the elections, he said he would change Venezuela’s constitution to allow for unlimited presidential terms. As of 4 December, nothing short of a civil war or assassination can stop him from making that happen.

According to the US daily The Los Angeles Times, Carlos Escarra, a Chavez supporter and member of Venezuela’s national assembly, said that legislators would meet this week to discuss constitutional “architecture.” On the agenda, apart from unlimited presidential terms, is the transfer of ownership of businesses and factories to worker cooperatives, the legal strengthening of decrees made by the president, and the tightening of controls over broadcast media.

These changes are just the beginning. Chavez, on the wave of his new mandate, will work to deepen his “Bolivarian Revolution” inside Venezuela. In his victory speech, Chavez said “the new phase that begins today will have the deepening, amplification and expansion of the Bolivarian Revolution as a fundamental strategy.”

Chavez also claimed that his victory was a great loss to the “empire” and the “devil,” referring to the US and President George W Bush.

Chavez’s victory, while not surprising, is a cause for concern in Washington. Democrats and Republicans must recognize that Chavez will likely remain in power for many years to come, beyond the end of his new six-year term. His ties with Russia, China and Iran will only deepen over time.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini congratulated Chavez from Tehran on 4 December, saying: “The victory of freedom seekers and independent-minded figures in Venezuela and Latin America points to the love of the people of the region for real independence and their hatred for US officials' arrogant attitude.”

Referring to plans for a Kalashnikov assault rifle factory in Venezuela, Chavez stated that “soon we will be selling [the rifles] to countries in Latin America.”

With China, Chavez has signed development deals worth billions of dollars, and plans to work with China stretch well into the future. And if Chavez manages to complete his plans for a pipeline from Venezuela through Colombia to the Pacific coast, it will likely boost oil sales between China and Venezuela, already at 200,000 barrels per day (bpd). Venezuela hopes to expand these sales to 500,000 bpd by 2009-2010.

Ultimately, Washington must abandon the silent treatment. Chavez’s victory underlines a need for real dialogue between Washington and Caracas. Further distance between the two countries cannot be allowed. Yet given Chavez’s hardened stance and the Bush administration’s concern elsewhere, it appears a deeper geopolitical divide between the two countries lies in the future.

The 3 December victory for Chavez and his so-called revolution in Venezuela has also highlighted a fundamental weakness in US foreign policy, both in Latin America and around the world.

The Bush administration’s strong rhetoric about freedom, democratic values and “our” way of life is balanced on the relatively weak foundation of the world’s standard for free and fair elections. As long as leaders like Chavez can demonstrate they have been elected by voters allowed to express their volition at the ballot box, there is little Washington can do in terms of regime change.

Chavez is aware of the importance of maintaining a semblance of free and fair elections to fend off unilateral efforts to remove him from power. Even if he changes the constitution to allow himself to run for president until he is as old as Cuba’s Fidel Castro, there is nothing the US, or any other country, can do to sway world opinion against him as long as he is democratically elected.

This reality is perhaps more threatening than Chavez’s ties with Iran, or his intent to distribute Kalashnikov rifles throughout the Americas like candy. For now, we know Chavez will remain in power for another six years. It is likely he will remain Venezuela’s president until at least 2021. What he does between now and then is anyone’s guess. Chavez is in no hurry. He is in power now and there is little anyone can do to change that until 2012 and quite likely well beyond.
