| Question on digital cameras and Memory card Ok, so I have two digital cameras. The older of the two (Olympus c-4000) uses SD memory cards, I think.
Anyway- this morning I tried to transfer some photos to the memory card using a USB cable attached to the camera itself (the way I always transfer photos), and the 'big card' that would hold over 300 photos before, now only holds 19. It's not the resolution, as that hasn't changed.
Can memory cards loose memory or quit working?
Also, the big card has a brother, both are 512 mb (big at the time I bought them) both used to hold 312 photos each. Now, one holds 19, the other holds 90. What is going on here?

| Have you had your cards near anything that could give it a good static discharge (e.g. really dry climate)? Memory cards are no different than the memory that goes into your computer (other than it's size and application).
If anything, I'd download the remaining pics off the card...reformat and see if you get your card space back. Also, the pictures on the cards can get corrupted as well. |

| try reformatting it. Usually works for me. You can do it in the camera.

Pics are off... I took about 45 pictures off of the card, and it says it only has room for 19....
So, I'll try the re-formatting tonight. I'll also re-set the camera just incase it's funking up my pics on import.
I just need to get it working properly again so I can sell it. I could sell it without the cards, but it will be more of a draw if I can sell it as a package capapble of taking 700+ photos.
Our new camera is a Sony that uses the new memory sticks... and I've got 2 cards with 1GB ea for our Great Britain trip on Thursday. Should be good for about 650 photos at full res.
Thanks guys!

| Doc,
Does your computer have a reader for CF and SD cards? If you had asked me that a couple of weeks ago, I'd have said no since it's not obvious. But lo and behold, there is a slot on the side of my laptop that accepts both the older/large CF cards as well as the stamp-like SD cards. If you can put the card in your computer, you'll see if the problem is lack of space (fomatting/corruption issue) or a reader issue (space is there, just can't use it). You may also be able to retrieve any photos that show up on the computer that don't show up on the camera.
Have fun in the UK. I'll be there (London) for a few days beginning the 9th...work related/no time for fun.

| I used to struggle with the Canon software to download photos off the camera until I discovered a USB multimedia reader with something like 10 different formats supported. What a pleasure! Now I just pop in the card, and treat it as any other folder, download, move etc.
Sooo much better!
