Domestic 4x4 question

My dad has a 2005 GMC Sierra Denali. It has a full time 4wd system, and it has an auto locking rear diff. My 99 cruiser is also full time 4wd, so as I understand it... w/o center locked its "1wd", w/ center locked "2wd", and w/ center and rear its "3wd" assuming 0 traction situations.

How does the GMC system work? Is their a locking center? Can the locking rear be useless if the front wheels are left spinning, due to no locking center diff? I hope that if the front tires loose traction and just spin it doesnt leave the rear useless, but I wouldn't bet against it...

I ask because I recently had the truck in a muddy coal mine, and was starting to get worried about getting stuck.

Anyone know the details of the GMC 4x4 system?

-Matt

Well, I have a 2004 GMC Sierra Z71. It has a locking rear diff, and it locks whether or not your 4WD is engaged (when there is slippage). I have gone up some rocky slopes on hunting trips w/o 4WD because the rear locker kicked in and got me where I needed to go. I do not think there is any center or front locker available from the factory on these; it seems to operate independently from the t-case.

Of course, the Denali may have some other options available, but surely it is the same drivetrain as mine.

Hope this helps...

the intended workings of a GMC 4x4 system has no bearing on whether you will get stuck or not.

Your locker kicks in and is automatic?! unless you have a detroit locker which isnt a factory option I beleive you ar talking about a Limited slip.

actually limited slip uses clutches and high revs (of the driveshaft) and is usually suited to high-performance racing. There are auto-locking diffs...just that toyota was smart enough not to use them

The Denali is Fulltime 4WD, so surely it has a different Tcase/center diff than your PT 4WD GMC Not that I really care what any GMC has in it

Yea, Denali is fulltime 4wd. Rear has a locker that auto engages when it senses too much slip, or something like that. Just got me wondering if that also auto locks a center diff to ensure power goes to the rear, and doesn't just get sent forward to tires w/o grip.

I'd take my cruiser anyday, but that being said, I do enjoy the 340hp the truck has. As for my dad, hes a good sport, mom "stole" the 03 100.

Edit:

I know one of you guys/gals knows the answer, out w/ it!
