Any experience with cedar house / chalet style ?

Anyone had experience building a house similar to this or had much experience with cedar siding?

Just wondering how it costs out compared to a traditionally styled home.

Our home has cedar siding as well as wood trim and wood windows. I can't say how much more cedar is than X because I don't know what you are comparing it to but I can say, nowdays, it's very expensive. Our home is 30? years old and back then it wasn't too expensive here in BC however we did a major reno 7 years ago and needed some more siding and wow.... it was pricing stuff.

Couple of comments:
  • the natural wood look, like in the pic, will be a hassle to maintain. Solid stain will last much longer
  • high cellings, like the pic, are harder to keep warm in cold climates.
  • cedar siding will last a long time and look good if it's properly maintained. make sure you are ok to stain/paint when it needs it.
  • if it's a wet climate, like we have in the north west, make sure the roof has good overhangs to keep the walls/window trim dry.

cedar house - burns very well in dry climates.

Built a cedar sided house.
Soft wood and doesn't rot.
Does show grain because of it's softness where exposed to the extreme environmental elements.
Does shrink, so butted ends of siding might open up revealing a crack. When shingled, should not matter.
Carpenter bees will make holes on thick sections of wood that is left unpainted/stained.
I've heard that woodpecker could be a problem because of it's softness but have not personally experienced it.
Splits easy, so a pneumatic nailer would be ideal to prevent end grain splitting when nailing near the end of thin pieces of siding.
