REI Wish List
Ok,
If you had a couple hundred on a gift card to REI, what would be on your wish list.
I've got just about everything I need or want for camping, car, tent and backpacking.
What would you get - limited to what REI carries.
I've thought about a handheld GPS or a car canopy (Kelty IIRC). New pair of hiking boots would be great...but boring. Gotta be something you'd treat yourself to that you otherwise wouldn't get for yourself!
Throw out your ideas.

arcterxy (sp?). can't never afford any of their gear on my own budget, would gladly sport a new rainjacket or pack w/somebody else's.
I'm in your boat too: some years of working there allowed me to buy pretty much anything I 'needed', and most of what I wanted. Now I'm just doing upkeep... and finding hobbies that go "Boom".

I try not to spend any moeny at REI. They are a proud sponsor of the Sierra Club, who works diligently to close 4x4 trails throughout the US.

I know - have a gift cert. tho. Can only get 65% of it's value at best on the gift card exchange type websites. Would rather get a table saw or more ham gear, but...

I'd go with the GPS then. If you get a Garmin, I can help you out with the Topo software.

Nope - $10 or less and they'll cash the rest out.

Thanks - still thinking about the GPS. Have an old streetpilot 2730 and the western US software from Garmin. Gotta say recent posts of new Garmin units and the topo's available make the streetpilot look like shiat!

Yeah, Arcteryx stuff is expensive. I don't own any but I have seen a lot come through SteepandCheap.com . That is a online clearance site for backcountry.com, each item is on there for a certain amount of time, you can only order during that time-frame, etc. (items not sold out are repeated in the next days/weeks though) Obviously trying to make it more fun/exciting to buy, but they do have shockingly good deals at times. I've seen many of the $500+ Arcteryx jackets for $100-200, brand new, full warranty, even returnable, etc.

Hi All:
Yep, I've been a REI member for more than 20 years, but have barely spend any $$ there over the recent years because of the anti-4x4 stance they have taken (Sierra Club, et al.)
I'd say spend that gift certificate on the basics, like wool socks, long underwear, camp stuff, etc. Then look for an alternative supplier that will respect your recreation choices.
Regards,
Alan

Couldn't agree more regarding REI and their offroading position.
Bought my wife a pair of Merril sandals and some slippers. Bought myself a pair of Sorel slippers and a new North Face vest. Poof...at REI prices the certificate was history.

This must be falling on deaf ears. None here seems to care?
My local site has a strong anti REI and Cabbelas following.
These guys plug money all over to help close land to motorized use.
Way to go all you supporters.

If it's a gift certificate, the money's already been spent. Better to use it rather than have all that money spent on the Sierra Club.
However, watch what you buy carefully. A large percentage of outdoor brands give money to wilderness groups as well. These include: The North Face, Cascade Designs (MSR, Platypus, Sea To Summit, ect), Outdoor Research, Mountain Hardwear, Black Diamond, and Patagonia. Those are just the ones I've looked into. Backcountry.com is also a huge supporter of wilderness groups and has stated that they support the Red Rock Wilderness act which is trying to close virtually all red rock areas in utah.
Research or ask before you buy!

Interesting - almost seems counterproductive. Companies that want you to buy their product that's designed for outdoor use and activity and yet fund efforts to shut those same outdoor areas down!

Actually, roadless areas are where their products are used. Me, I'm a fan of wilderness--there isn't much of it left. I'd have no use for my truck if people were allowed to destroy what's left of wild lands--I'd have no place to drive to that I couldn't drive in my car.

A couple things wrong with this:
-Have you been anywhere in the western united states???? There is so much open space its incredible. Wilderness is not dying out. It will be here for a long long time, whether people care to protect it or not.
-People aren't allowed to destroy any kind of land, and left to their own devices, I don't think they would choose to anyway. Allowing the people to be stewards of the land rather than being shut off to government control is not a smart way to manage, nor is it fair or ethical either.

I spend money at REI, I also support Tread Lightly, TLCA, local clubs etc so I think I balance my money vote toward my own usage. More importantly I write and vote.
Oh, and I would buy some pants. These are my favorite...

So why do folks drive 40 miles to the woods to have campfires they won't extinguish while they drink beer from cans and bottles they won't haul out and create paths on unstable slopes so that the soil will erode?
Oh, because it's in my backyard, not theirs... There are places that I used to hike and train that are now so beat-down and trashed out (including unburied dead animals) that I just won't go there anymore.
