If you could only carry one knife what would it be?
I haven't formed an opinion just yet. My "lost" knife was a Kershaw 3'' blade or similar.
So, post your favorite here.

I've got a Kershaw with a 3.25" blade that I really like. It's one of the Ken Onion design knives.
Thing is, I'd almost choose to carry a multi-tool over a knife these days, but I don't need that much of a blade, really.

German hand made Puma. Got it as a wedding gift three years ago and it still holds an edge.

If you have money get a Strider.
If you don't get a Benchmade.
If your broke and still need a decent knive get a Ka-bar.
Simple as that....

Leatherman or SOG. I have both and like them. But... are they a 'knife'?

I too prefer the multi tool these days...nice to have the
'extra wrench' when you're in a tight spot. I highly
recommend the Leatherman Wave because it also has
two external 'thumb deploy' capable blades. In other
words, no unfolding the tool to get to a blade.
For a strictly tactical or utility blade check out Columbia River
Knives: www.crkt.com. Their 'M16' tactical is an amazing blade.
my two cents!

same one I carry daily, its been a great knife, actaully this is my 2nd one, 1st one did some welding with the alt on a cruiser, then I treid to use it to pry open a home key box, broke the tip............yeah I know
but like it enough to buy a new one last week.
also have another similar kersaw but its too bulky.
I have at least 8 multi tools, one in each Cruiser, one in the boat and one in my carry bag. I pick em up at garage sales or pawn shops for a few bucks. Most are letherman or gerber.
BEST machete BTW is a Woodsmans Pal, I have my grandpa's from ww2 and it kicks ass.

I’ll put in a vote for the CRKT’s… Although not without a caveat. They are made in Taiwan. Not saying don’t buy one, just shop around for a good price. I picked up this at a local gun show for 25 bucks. I would not use it as a “ditch” blade but for doing crap around the lower 40 it isn’t half bad.

Doubt it . It's a Japanese knive co.
The Ken Onions are nice , though very sussceptable to pocket crud interference with the speed safe opening. Still not a bad way to spend 50 dollars. The odd man out is a Kershaw as well . And it is actually quicker to deploy then the semi auto's. Plus it's a true draw knive that does not have to be indexed like the tip down carry of the whirlwind's.

I like my Benchmade folders - cheap and tough. I need a thinner knife for my dress pants - think I'll check out a Kershaw like Pimp's...

you will like it, I carry it in my shorts or jeans...........thats as dressy as I get but its thin, easy to open with one hand and well made.
I also have the one that swank60 has, its nice but too big for daily carry for me.

A Leatherman is hard to be for being useful. I carry a Walker Spyderco 1/2 serrated that has been good and fairly cheap but it's not a "lifetime" knife. I lose them too often to carry a real expensive one for everyday use. They don't make that specific model anymore but you can find them on ebay.

i've got one of each of most of those posted. kershaw assisted open ones are pretty sweet, i like gerbers as well. schrade has never let me down in the past, especially not with the warranty... but the knife that goes everywhere with me is the victorinox. had the leatherman but found i liked the good old swisster too much to stray from it.

Funny , I only carry a knife when I'm on the job .. and then it's only used to break into the security entrance of apts . The same came be achieved with a mighty tug , but one time I got burned .. the building manager walked arounf the corner inside , as I yanked the door open with a huge *insert noise effect here* . I think his bellowing at me was a tad noisier , but hey .. A rubber gripped Gerber does the trick for me ...
Tyler
PS : I made my first covert knife purchase in the hallway outside my grade 7 class . A bad girl named Patty sold me a nice 4" locking blade .... seeing as how my allowance was 25 cents a week , I can't see how I could have paid much for it ... sweet deal

This is actually quite easy. A Leatherman, period. I have carried one on my belt for a decade and I use it daily.

I carried several through survival school to try out. The instructors were glad to try out and demonstrate the benefits of each. Serrated blades dropped out early, didn't last as a working knife that would be sharpened regularly. They also didn't cut most things in the woods as well as a sharp non-serrated. Even meat and fibrous wood that I thought serrated would be better at. For pocket-size folders, the multi-tools are obviously better. I tried out a dozen before settling on the Leatherman Wave for my unit when the Wave first came out. The guys in my unit and I used and abused many brands, the Wave survived. That was about seven years ago.
For camping I also carry a big knife. I haven't had the luxury of being paid to try out a bunch of these, but my M9A1 Phrobis III has been a workhorse. It's a bayonet knife with 7" blade, 4-1/2" handle, issued in all services. My Navy Seal version has a versatile sheath for many carrying options, nice for carrying a heavy knife. The size and weight are a luxury for cutting and pounding big stuff quickly, my multi-tool is no comparison for setting up camp. It's an axe, shovel, and hammer all in one. If you go big expect to spend big or end up with a beat-up edge you need to sharpen often. Big knives need to take a pounding or there's no point carrying one.
For working at a machine shop, I've quickly trashed my blades and rarely am out of reach of tools, so the leatherman sees only occasional use. Of course I can't carry either knife at my airline job, but the multi-tool used to be my prized possesion on the road. I don't have any idea what your use will be, but there's some thoughts.

Gerber 650. Never been a big knife carrier until about 5 years ago. I use this thing almost daily. Love it.

Hey PIMP, speaking of multi-tools. I had a leathermen in my 80. Wife got pulled for speeding the other day and went for the insurance papers in the center console. Cop saw the leathermen and about freaked out (it's in a case). Called for back up and had her out of the car. Back-up showed up, wife is in tears by this point. Backup was a friend of ours (kids friends parent actually). He explained that the leathermen is considered a weapon and she didn't tell them she had it (she didn't know what it was).
Needless to say, the leathermen is now in the garage (for now).

I keep a Spyderco Delica clipped to my pocket most of the time. I use it at work a few times a day. Nice smaller knife thar holds it's edge for a long time.

I used to be able to carry a switchblade in uniform, even got a little card explaining in case I was questioned about it. I found a very sturdy (and expensive) German made switchblade in Amsterdam, coolest knife I've owned. One of our PJs tried to buy it from me when he went off to instruct full time, I mailed it to him after he left. He's supposed to be finding me another, but it's been years now.

Carried daily. Light, strong, stays sharp and has pocket clip (kinda hard on pockets though.)
Kershaw Vapor, serrated:
