I own one too, it is also called the Gerber Gator Serrator (they make a non-serrated version too). LOVE IT!
But, the ultimate knife (though too big to be practical): http://shivakicustomknives.com/
Not an art show winner, but all about business. Held one, felt better than a 357 Mag.

Funny. I was given this set as a gift (gee, thanks Ma!). They are what you would expect: Taiwanese poo. The one I do use often is the 4th on from the right, square blade. Good for chopping scallions, garlic, etc. The odd one 2nd from the nd on the right is a freak, and useless too.

My wife just got me this knife for camping/fishing and general use.
Benchmade Rukus
http://www.benchmade.com/products/mo....asp?model=610
Overall Length: 10.12"
Closed Length: 5.95"
Blade Length: 4.25"
Blade Thickness: 0.150"
Blade Material: S30V Stainless Steel
Blade Hardness: 58-60HRC
Lock Mechanism: AXIS
She wanted to get me the mini-rukus but wasn't able too and she got a blazing deal on the full size. It is huge and razor sharp. At first I thought it was too big, but surprisingly it rides in the pocket and I don't even notice it is there using the clip.
I love it.

Spyderco Endura
CRKT Crawford Falcon
CRKT Bear Claw (LaGriffe style clone)
CRKT Ryan 7
Spyderco Civilian
Spyderco Harpie
A good K-Bar
All folders can be deployed quick draw style with a flick of the wrist as they clear the pocket. No need to touch the blade/thumb hole/stud. The Falcon I like for a rear carry for quick deployment into a pakal or reverse grip. The remainder for front carry. I find the Bear Claw to be most versatile for everyday/camp use....unless you want to cut wood or your steak with it of course. Very good cutting power for such a small knife. Mainly because of how the knife is held with the finger hole. It lines the blade up with the structure of the arm and locks it in. Nasty little sucker in the hands of someone intent on cutting you up. Snaps right into the kydex sheath and hangs from the pocket (if you turn the clip around) for quick one hand deployment. Also clips well to your seat belt and can be pulled out quickly for when you're driving through those sketchy areas.
CRKT gives you great bang for your buck. Yes they are made in Taiwan, but they have their people over there overseeing quality control. Customer service has been fast and helpful.
Spyderco is another great mfr. Though I wasn't happy when the switched from the plastic molded clip to the metal clip on the Endura. I still have mine and I'm not giving it up.
The main thing for me is: Does it feel good in my hand? I haven't found a Benchmade yet that did. Similar to a bunch of other manufacturers'. Spyderco and CRKT almost always do.
William

thant's a loaded Question... Fixed Blade or Folder and on the folder and with the folder spring assist or not?
I have both and have used them in adverse conditions. They are both American made.
Fixed Blade: I have a 'Mercworx" Proeliator
Big, 9.25"recurve blade, full tang, heavy, secure grip even when your hands are slippery. Good for choping, cutting, slicing. What ever when ever.... $450-$500.00
MercWorx - Product Detail
The next is a "Zero Tolerance" made buy the same man who made the legendary "Strider."
Spring Assisted 3.75" recurve blade, # 3202, $295.000
ZT - Zero Tolerence knives Assisted Folders
I spend this much because it's a lifetime warranty and everything I buy is a tax write off. The more I spend the less Obama can take from me.

Why all the lock backs?!? If I had to depend on only one knife period, it would probably be a K-Bar!

Just one????..
I guess I'd have to stick with the same knife I've carried for the past 30 or so years, my old Swiss Army Knife. And it still has the tweezers and toothpick!
I keep a hatchet around for the big stuff.....

Part of why I love Oregon so much. You can't drive too far without seeing a gun rack. Everyone carries and hunts. Women plan their pregnancies around hunting season, just so Dad's around for the birthdays/etc. First thing out of most wheelers mouths isn't "Hey I'm so and so.." it's..
"So what'dya hunt for, and wanna go with us?"
Also why some areas the crime rate's so low, you know damn well you'll get a butt full of buckshot or rocksalt before you're beat down.

You must not be from the Portland Metro area! LOL! I love Oregon, too... But I sure wish I was back in other parts of the state.

I wouldn't drop a penny on a gerber ever again. I got them back in the Marines (all 4 - The Mk I & II, & Command I & II), and they were just ****. Steel was soft, and brittle at the same time. Don't get me wrong, the engineers that design the ergonomics of the sheathes, blades and handles are somewhere near genius level (in that they achieve what they intend to); but - the steel is just ... ****. I could wear them out in a day; then again, I was raised with buck knives ... sharpen it once a year, 6 months if you REALLY abused it. Later, I got more of their (Gerber) blades, and their multi-tool ... again & again, cutting edge dulling in the sheath just from carrying, chipping the cutting edge, snapping off tips (and NO, I'm not particularly a big "pryer" with knives ... that's what craftsman screwdrivers are for).
In fact, with their multi-tools, I noticed that the knife-blade tip on mine was BLUE, from being burned in final machining. I looked at at least a dozen more of them in stores, all over the US (yeah, I'm anal that way), and, in every case, the tip was blue.
Columbia River (CRKT) DOES have some very nice knives, but, most of their quick-open folders don't really function (open) as well as some other brands. (not just in my hands). It's an ergonomics thing, maybe you need to have really small hands.
BTW - Buck is no longer the diamond-hard steel of yesteryear ... there's now a "China" proudly stamped at the bottom of the blades. That said, I bought, and carry 1 of 5 skeleton folders that I bought a year ago, most days. Still some nice designs, although old Al (Buck) must be spinning in his grave over the outsourcing.
Don't know where you are, DJSH, but, if you're anywhere near OKC, I suggest that you go to "Outdoor America " at 1925 N MacArthur Blvd. They have about .... 1000 blades under glass there. Kershaws, CRKT, SOG's, Buck, Case, Kabar ... all styles and types. There, you can pick them up, hold them, and decide what fits YOUR needs, and your hand. As a few have mentioned here, first thing is, WHAT do you expect to need it for? Just like a gun, or suspension & tire selection for your FJ40; there is no "perfect for everything" knife. The closest thing to perfect, would probably get you arrested, fired, or at least COUNSELLED if you tried to carry it for daily wear & use (unless you live and work out in the boonies). I still have my Buck 112 Ranger (from when it first came out), and ... aside from it traveling in a holster, it's still one of my fave's for carrying in the field. Even closed, it still enhances your punching power (both straight, and downstroke).

Everywhere else I go...
CRKT M16-12Z It's the half-serrated tanto style blade. I've had it for a little over a year and a half and I've only had to sharpen it once, and only because I dropped it and nicked the blade.

Said time and time again, CRKT is the one... I own 9 - yes nine - of their knives.
Carson Designs M-16
K.I.S.S.
Hammond ABC
M-16 sheath
Stiff KISS
Dogfish
and duplicates of the M-16 and Hammond in different colors.
Best by far is the Hammond A.B.C. (All Bases Covered)
It has a blunted tip, so no accidentally stabbing yourself putting it into the sheath, flat blade on one side, completely serrated on the other. Zylex handle and sheath. Sheath comes with mounting brackets for a belt buckle and the like. I use it for scuba diving, rock climbing, and general daily carry...
I also own a few leathermans. Leatherman Wave is always in the LC, (who knows when you'll need it) and I daily carry a Leatherman Skeletool CF. (carbonfiber, a little more expensive, way less weight... trade off is that i wouldn't beat on it as much) The Skeletool is great because it doesn't have a carry case, just a belt clip. Works awesome...

I just bought a kershaw zing and really like it. I haven't used it much yet but the blade is very sharp and is made of a good quality steel. I also really like the orange handle because it makes it easy to find if i were to drop it or something.

Spyderco H1, 4" blade, non-serrated. Sharp, light, rust-proof, has and keeps an edge like any good Japanese knife should.
