Nice LMF Cal !
Yep, the BMF has been out of production for some time. I found both of mine on Ebay ( I spent WAY too much for them BTW ! ) They seem to be getting harder to find in good shape though
As soon as I saw the BMF, I was in love.
Heh heh.. Its a monster!
Oh, and that soft grippy handle
I did read however, that BRAKE FLUID will severely damage the DuPont handle, so be extra careful around engine bays and brake lines with your BMF/LMF
Its been my carry knife of choice, especially when hiking (aka wandering alone aimlessly) in Nevada and Utah deserts .......

I usually buy cheap knives to use for work, abuse the crap out of them and then throw them away.
I like Cold Steel for that purpose, as they are cheap as hell, but sturdy and heavy. I have a Pro Lite Tanto that I got at their sidewalk sale for $5.00. I like the Tanto blade because I can use the end like an Xacto knife.
Cold Steel makes a tough product for very cheap, especially if you go by the factory in Ventura and pick up the blems and seconds.
If I had to carry one knife, I'd carry the Victorinox One Hand Trekker, or Parachutist. I've had a few of these and they are very functional, because they have the Swiss Army basics--locking serrated blade, can opener, bottle opener, flat-head and phillips screwdrivers, belt cutter, tweezers, and toothpick.

I've been carrying a Benchmade 806 since about 1995. Lost it twice and it always came back and broke it twice and Benchmade always fixed it. Sharp and it has been in some bad spots!

Yea, I've carried it for hundreds of backpacking miles. It's way too heavy for hiking but I sleep well at night

I'm with you here.
Cold Steel makes some functional stuff. I've bought a bunch of machettes and stuff like that from them.
I like my CRKT knives too, because they are good and affordable.

Here is my daily carry knife. I have used all kinds, including Gerber, Buck, Leatherman, Swiss, and CRKT... this is my favorite so far.
This is a CRKT HAWK D.O.G.
It is a little thick for a daily carry, but it makes up for it in it's robustness. It truly feels like a fixed blade.
Here are the specs:

• Blade Material: AUS 8 Stainless Steel
• Blade Style: Clip Point with Bead Blast Finish
• Handle Material: 6061-t6 Aluminum with Zytel Grips
• Locking Mechanism: Deadbolt Over Grabstep
• Pocket Clip: Custom Ambidextrous Stainless Steel
• Includes Lanyard Hole MEASUREMENTS:
• Blade Length: 3.5"
• Handle Length: 4.62"

I got a Letherman (don't know which kind) from my FIL a couple of years ago.
I did not think much of it at first, but as of late I've been using it quite a bit.
Some of my friends who saw it in action the other day called me McVyver(sp) because it had so many different uses for.

I just bought a leatherman TI Charge in black the special millitary edition. I didn't like my Gerber multi tool because my wire cutters got bent up so bad it was hard to close the needle nose and the screwdrivers got bent up. My leatherman is supposed to be able to cut hardwires, and the bites are supposed to be hardend.

I have carried a large sebenza for years. Very durable. In a fixed blade my favorites were built by Rob Simonich.

I had a leatherman wave for 10 years, used it daily the serrated blade is now a strait blade. cut hundreds of wires never bent a blade of any kind. sadly it's back broke so i got a new one. i did not like the screw driver tip thought it might get lost and it did. I got pissed and chucked it now i have the leatherman surge, got it at cosco it came with a cool folding knife and a lot of extra tips. all be more careful this time. out of my 100 knifes the leatherman is my favorite by far

It depends...
I attach one of these to the shoulder strap on my pack when hiking in "kitty" country. Small and discrete, but easy to reach with either hand.

http://www.khukuriknife.com/khukuri.htm
The excellent cutting power of Khukuri (Gurkha knife) was first experienced by the British in India who had to face it in the battles since 1814 while combating the Gorkha army in western Nepal. From that very moment Khukuri (Gurkha knife) established its fame and became legend. So the Khukuri (Gurkha knife) is also known by the name of Gurkha knife. In the Gurkha soldier's grip, this small piece of curved steel “Gurkha Knife” becomes an incredibly menacing weapon with which he has demonstrated rare feats of bravery while facing the enemy in many a battlefield. This excellent piece of “Gurkha Knife” also Nepalese knife has fought many battles in the Nepalese History and has shown very good reputation. Because of that the Khukuri (Gurkha knife) is Nepal’s national knife. The blade of Gurkha soldiers “Gurkha Knife” has its own fame and popularity. All the Nepalese people are so proud of this “Gurkha Knife” that this gurkha knife, Khukuri (Gurkha knife) is liked by all the Nepalese people.
edit - as a side note, this knife is the choice of "lofty wiseman" former SAS survival skills instructor.

To carry daily, a multi tool with a knife. If it has to be just a knife, I too really like ATS 34 as it holds an awesome edge and does not corrode.

While raffle prize shopping at Home Depot for January's club meeting, one of the things I picked up was a nifty multi-tool. It had your standard knife, bottleopener, saw,f ile, etc, but also a decent sized hatchet head and hammer on the otherside. The hatchet/hammer part didnt fold because of the size, and came with a guard over the blade.
I cant remember the exact brand name, but it was labeled 'The Camper' or something like that. It was also $10 (xmas clearout)

I carry a SOG trident everyday. Stays sharp even after months of cutting and dropping it in the table. That and the feel of the automatic blades is amazing. You can also cut rope without opening the blade.

I've had the original release Jess Horn Spyderco with partially serated blade for about 10 years now, great EDC knife.
My next knife will be a Spyderco ParaMilitary. Bought one for a friends 50th B-day, great knife.

Since I don't often frequent areas where I expect hand-to-hand combat these days I usually leave the battle knives in the gun case.
For everyday use I wear a Victorinox multi-tool. It has several improvements over the Leatherman and Gerber I've used in the past. Notably: It's longer so has more power on the pliers and cutters (2 cutters), the tools (more of them) are on the outside so when the tool is inverted for pliers the handles are smooth and most importantly-ALL the tools lock. If you buy one with the hex tool set as pictured the case for it can be used for the Gerber mini LED light which is excellent. My version has a few more tools than the picture (like scissors). They make several levels.

When I'm traveling I wear a Victorinox Traveler set. Several knives out of mine have been broken or lost or confiscated. At this time it is a Wenger (the *other* Swiss Army knife, more robust IMO) with a locking serrated blade PLUS a regular blade along with the typical basic Swiss Army Knife tools including in this instance a corkscrew. The compass and magnifying glass and mini Maglite have proved invaluable countless times.

But for 4wheeling my blade of choice has become a sailors rigging knife. The marlinspike is handy for D-ring pins and the blade is very robust. Being flat it can be used with a maul and flat surface to chop rope with a square cut for whipping the end. The straight blade on the outside for fine work and whittling and the serrated inner part for heavy hacking/sawing is a good feature.
The gold standard in this field is Myerchin. I carry a Navigator Pro Light. Both tools lock and there's a red LED light that shines on your work with a thumb switch. There's also a small D-ring pin key in the blade.

Myerchin is the knifemaker of choice for the Coast Guard and the Seal Team boat drivers/bosuns. Both of these crews demand and get the best.
Happy motoring.

not having used these knives this is a very valid point, the best knife is the knife that will be used, abused and live. if you have a $200 knife taht stays in your pocket while you use a $30 because your afraid of breaking the blade then taht $200 knife is worthless. i love my smith and wesson EMT911 knife because of its razor sharp serrated edge and its thick shank, thick enough to where i can pry on anything i want and if it does break its still under warranty. theres no point on it, instead its a flat blade screwdriver type end, and theres no smooth blade its all serrated. while that does have its drawbacks, i know i can pound away with this knife risk free. i carry other blades for other uses, but when its time to get physical with somthing, theis is where i turn.

Hi all,
I love my Spyderco Delica. It comes with me at all times, as it is easier for me to be okayed to carry that instead of my NAA 22 WMR in my pocket when I go to my sales territory in Miami, FL. I do have my carry permit, and my Spyderco Delica is partly serrated, and after having it for 6 years, its still sharp and still cuts manila rope pretty good.

This is my favorite. It's a Benchmade 710, and as you can see, it gets used. I've been abusing it for about six years I think. Co-workers cringe when they see some of the things I can do with it

Steve,
I get the same thing when I whip out the Spyderco. Ill never forget the day I used it to remove a staple at the financial aid counter when I worked there as a work study. The student never gave me a problem. :-)

My main criteria is a pocket clip. As such, over the years I've carried a couple different Ken Onion Kershaws, a few different Gerbers, and several CRKTs (loved the K.I.S.S., hated the Rollock). Except for the rollock, they were all nice knives and I didn't have any complaints at all. In fact, I'd probably still be carrying the Ken Onion Blackout if it weren't a tad big for my daily carry taste.
I recently picked up a Sog Twitch II. I love it. The spring-assisted opening is spot-on and once I got used to it I like the little finger lever on the top. I tend to prefer liner locks, but this frame lock is ultra reliable and I'm not even sure why they put a safety lock on the release since there's no way you could 'accidentally' release the blade once open.

Gerber paraframe. Cheap. Easy to clip in a pocket. Quick to put to use. Sturdy. Did I mention cheap!
