CB antenna mounting ideas

Just curious, can cb antennas work wehn mounted horizontally. I just thinking about mounting either one or two horizontally on my yakima basket.

I'm currently running a 4 foot firestik that mounts on the back via a door jam mount that goes in the rear hatch.

The firestik is nice but its not a "whip" style so it easily gets caught in trees and does give much.

I am thinking of going the yakima route, a 4 foot whip that will take tree better or possibly even an 8 foot francis whip that will mount in my ucrrent place, fold over and maybe zip-tie to the yakima 1A crossbars...might look pretty sweet too.

Any opinions....let mmm fly.

Work? maybe kinda. At all efficient? No. Probably the worst orientation possible. I'd expect a very short antenna mounted vertically would be better than a long one horizontal.

No it won't work. Not worth a damn anyway. Your RF output is polarized. You will basically have no ground plane and IF you did all of your radiated energy would be going straight up. The only thing worse is an antenna that is bent over in an arc. Your SWR goes through the roof and you can actually damage your output transistor(s) by transmitting this way. (If you do want to tie one down when traveling through thick brush the smart way to do it is to mount the antenna on the front of the rig and flex it backwards. Thsi way branches tend to push it down and slide over it instead of hooking underneath and pulling it up as you go under.

The antenna has to be vertical for effective transmission or reception.
