Just another dumb gift idea.

Forget that thing. You'll sit in the dirt looking stupid waiting for it to air one tire while everyone else drives on by, going home.

How much is your time worth? I can't imagine that thing puts out .5cfm if at that...better pack a chair if you plan to use it on a Cruisa!

Kinda what I thought but always good to get additional negative reinforcement.

For the same price, you'd be better off with one of these. It'll help with your hemorrhoids on long drives.

I just bit the bullet and bought a PowerTank...it's like a winch and all the other recovery/repair gear you buy/carry: Hopefully I'll never need to use it...but if I do it will make the whole process (including powering my air-impact) alot easier and faster!

Go for an outback instead, cheaper than a power tank and it does the same thing. I got my 10lb outback for $190.

Right. Almost the same, and you get to support a Cruiser guy. Jody Potter is around on this board (he goes by Outback I think) and is a really nice guy.

Good point, supporting Jody, is better than the bling effect you get by buying a Power tank.

Or you could just get a CO2 tank locally and buy the superflow regulator, or a Harbor Freight regulator if you don't own air tools. Nothing against the Power Tank product, it is clean and looks nice, if that's important go for it. My rig looks like it's abandonded when I'm driving it down the street, I don't need a powdercoated CO2 tank.

Are the Power Tanks that much more bling? They all use colored aluminum bottles and brass regulators...not sure what else would be more bling...

I guess by Bling I meant, its something everybody has and looks shinny and colorful Its a cool tank to have but paying $400 for it doesn't seem like its worth it, just my .02 guess that why I got the cheaper outback tank.

If I remember correctly the power tanks are powder coated and spun aluminium instead of steel. The Superflow regulator looks like it would be worth the bucks if you plan to run air tools.

Power Tank is a good product, very convient in that you can get everything by ordering a kit. However if your cash poor, ie just blew a pile 'O cash on drive train components and tires, a home built system works just as well.

LOL I was thinking along the same lines...If you get that tiny compressor you're going to want something comfy to sit on while you wait for it to fill a tire.....

Power Tank has an adjustable reg. Outback air is static at 150psi it think. Your still paying for some bling IMO but you do get something more with the Power Tank.

Exactly...just took a few more threads than I thought it would for someone besides me to say it

I'll probably go this route when I get one. Cheaper than a powertank but still has an adjustable reg.

These tank guys are going to price themselves out of a market, I think. When the powertank came out it was just at $200. for one color (silver unfinished, an adjustable regulator, and a hose. Now I see prices starting at around $300. and going up for fancy colors and lots of verbage.

Maybe they don't know that a friendly talk with a local welding supply place, letting them know what requirements need to be filled, can net the whole kit except maybe an airhose/tire inflator available at any auto supply for less than $150. With that you also get freedom from any refill issues - just take the tank in and they'll give out another one. Might not be so pretty... but what about banging trucks over rocks and gullys is supposed to be pretty?

Jody's setup has a fixed-pressure outlet, but you can choose what pressure you want when you order. He also sells a plug-in 90psi fixed regulator. I've got that, and it's a nice setup. 150 psi for tires, 90 psi for tools.

Spun-aluminum tanks aren't any nicer than steel ones. You really don't want to drop either one! And ctually, about half the time I trade in my tank at the welding shop for a full one, I get an aluminum tank. They're all the same diameter, so they all fit in my mounting bracket without having to adjust it.

You can approximate it by assuming a tire is a toroid. Possible with and without directly using calculus. 4crawler has some useful info. I bookmarked a bunch of math pages and spent a couple hours with it a few months ago. Can get a little "detailed".

Thank you for pointing me in that direction, and yes "detailed" would be the key word for the math challenged such as I. I sometimes can get cylinders that are rated for 2216 and hold 44-45 cu. feet and was wondering if using one was an option! Thanks again for the link!
scott

I must have slept through the "toroid" lecture!
