Question Hauling Wood?

I am going on a camping trip here soon with the 80 from Lincoln NE to Apple River WI. I would like to take a bunch of wood with me as if you buy it up there it is $6 for 3 small pieces of wood that lasts about 45 mins MAX Usually have a car load when we go up 4 passangers and the back up load to the ceiling. My Q? trying to figure out the best way to haul a bunch of wood up there... the only thing I can think of is packing 2 Rubbermaid containers full and strapping them down on the roof???? Any ideas?

Sounds like you need one of these:

Strap a couple of logs on the roof. Cut it when you get there.

I know I have thought long and hard about getting one but it is hard to justify spending $150+ for something I would only use a couple times a year

I only spent like $75 or less at Pepboys to get one. Look around on craigslist as well.

They come in handy, I've used it to take coolers, etc when using the third row, took my cooler parts to be hosed down at the car-wash, etc.

Even amazon has a several under $100

Naw, you can get one for under $100.00 easily.

Also, you'll find more uses for it than just hauling firewood. I'll wager you will put it to work more than just "a couple of times a year".

It wouldn't take long "getting raped" buying wood @ $6.00 a pair...for the thing to pay for itself. After that...you have a useful tool that will continue to save you money.

You can always sell it if you find yourself not using it...but I doubt that will happen. It's a no-brainer, go get one!

(belated Fathers day gift or something like that).

Nobody up there has a wood stove or fireplace?
Look in the yellow pages for fire wood. Offer they guy at the wood lot $15 for 1/8 cord. You will be golden.

I use a heavy canvas/polyester bag that I also use for collecting weeds around in the garden, it's tough as nails and holds a couple of days worth of wood, good for weekend camping trips. The bag is flexible, so odd sized firewood fits well.

Oh I am sure there are people up there but why would I want to 1. spend the time looking driving out to pick up and spend the extra money & 2. when i have all ready spent the time cutting my own wood and would not have to spend the extra time and money once I get up there.

Your probably right I found one in Sportsman Guide for $49. That's not bad at all and I am sure I will find other uses for it. Looks like work pretty good putting your cooler on it and your always ready

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but you are not supposed to transport cut firewood very far, typically across state lines. Dunno about out there, but they are very serious about it here in New England, the F&G depts will give you a ticket for doing this. This is how insects and other parasites get propagated into other territories, and makes them harder to manage.

Here's a poster from the State of WI about it:

http://www.na.fs.fed.us/firewood/rac...ds_fr_218v.pdf

I always just buy the stuff locally, chalk up the additional expense to the cost of camping.

I find this quite odd...bringing wood to burn camping.

You need to find a place in the woods to camp where wood actually grows and there is standing deadwood etc.

EDIT: Sorry, in hindsight I realize this is not possible all the time. That was the cheapness in me speaking...I hate paying for stuff like firewood. I would much rather spend my life savings and go into debt paying for land so I can go camping and have free wood .

I forgot about that. They took our firewood at the CA inspection station one time.

Wow, never heard of that either. Wonder if they do that in the south.
I would guess that the extra weight and the wind of it on the rack might cost you the same $ in gas as buying somethign up there.

Or you could just do this: D)

It's not only wood, but they will ask about certain food products such as bananas, apples, etc for fear of the same reason stated above

Wow, you guys can have a fire when you camp in the summer???

They just closed 1/2 the nearest Forest to all use, and no open burning is allowed anywhere in my county right now. Won't be long til the other 1/2 closes, and who knows when the monsoons will show up so things will green up...

I've used my $65 Wally world hitch hauler so much I had to take it apart & switch the bent parts around. Definately worth it, but it does compromise approach/departure angles, even through small dips.

If you don't tell them...I am curious how the heck they would know if your wood/bananas/apples/whatever...came from out of state?

You hit it on the head. Otherwise, you would have to have it sitting out or tell them. I do not believe the rangies have the authority to search a vehicle? Can anyone confirm or deny this, please?

At the CA inspection stations they will search your car.
They usually wave NV plates through, but they will stop Arizona plates. Lots of citrus pest that they don't want coming into the state.
In my case I had the wood in my PU bed and they saw it.

I don't think you're getting it...

Do you dump used motor oil in your backyard? I hope not. How would you feel if your neighbor did it in your yard, and ruined your water well?

Most gypsy moth propogation has occured by humans transporting their eggs to other areas. Don't contribute to the problem, help with the solution.

Oh..."I get it" just fine.

I "get it" that we are increasingly burdened with rules, laws, ordinances, regulations, permits, etc....to the point that it borders on the absurd. It's firewood for God's sake. 90% of anything in it is going to be burned up. IF the other 10% results in a localized problem area (highly unlikely according to current information) then the Forest Dept can simply erradiacate/supress that pest in that area.

Or, we can set up roadblocks and routinely stop vehicles to check them for items brought in from out of state. I mean...you never know when a Fire Ant, Cockroach, Gypsy Moth, Fruit Fly or some other horrid creature is hiding in some item. We're doomed for sure! I'm sure folks won't mind the inconvenience or intrustion, after all...its for the common good and Nirvana.

You have nothing to fear.

Quote:

Like anyone else, I would not be happy about the trespass.

I would also suggest that you have one "piss poor" water well if it is subject to contamination by a few quarts of used oil poured on the surface.

BTW, you might want to check and see if your front or rear main seals are leaking. We don't want any 5 legged frogs or 3 headed turtles running around in a couple of years, now do we?

Quote:

Here is the current spread of the "dreaded" gypsy moth over the last 100 years, and some "projected" movement. For Pete's sake... find something else to worry about.

Gypsy Moth in North America

You might consider trading in your Land Cruiser for a bicycle while you're at it, you are contaminating our air. We all know that contaminated air contributes to a reduction of the ozone layer which creates "global warming". We know this because the highly esteemed "Al Gore" tells us so.

So.......are you going to get that bicycle and "help with the solution", or you are going to drive your leaky/polluting LC and "contribute to the problem"?

Go hug your tree now, everything is going to be alright.
