Now that I have fixed all the negative things about my Mombassa, I think its the best tent out there! To learn more about the upgrades to the tent you can go to: http://forum.ih8mud.com/camping-gear-recovery/163643-mombasa-rain-fly-project.html

Traded off the Overland King for the Maggiolina GT Medium. Broke it in last weekend for ab & uni fest on the NorCal coast. No regrets so far!

Its a special rug. We're very proud of our special rug. It doesn't always get used in camp...but when it does: Look out.

That dang thing gets me more press than the trailer, tent, awning, etc.

Spressoman, I think I saw you post a picture of the rug before in another thread. I now have a rug like that for camping. My renter left it when they skipped out on the rent...doh.

Group Buy?

I know this is an old thread, but it there is a lot of great info here.

Looks like the group buy for the older model RTT happened in 8/06 or so. Any word on another group buy for the newer model? I am planning on building a trailer soon to tow behind the 40 (like wildyoats) and would love to get one of these mounted on it. The easy set up, off the dirt, etc. would make it MUCH easier to convince the wife to go out camping more often.

Mike, There might be some older Mombasa tents floating around SLC, Chat with Kurt @ Cruiseroutfitters.

The only reason I can remember the group buy is due to a newer model coming out, I dont see another group buy like what we had for some time.
Good luck

They also pop up for sale a good bit here on 'Mud. Keep an eye out for a few weeks and you'll find one. I have really enjoyed mine, for what it's worth.

I won the ARB Roof Top Tent that was raffled of during Cruise Moab '08. It was donated by Hugh at Safari Ltd. (Thanks Hugh!)

I finally got a chance to test it out last weekend here in Colorado. I mounted it on my stock '85 FJ60 using three Yakima bars. It fits my 60 well and I was able to mount it up on the roof by myself using a little ingenuity, 2 2x4's and a hill.

My wife and I went camping South of the Collegiate Peaks and took the 60 on some mild trails and forest roads and found a great campsite near a stream and lake. Set up the tent and all our gear in about 20 minutes (should be faster next time) and we slept in perfect comfort.

The ARB tent materials seem very well made and the tent was taught and felt sturdy. We had perfect weather so i can't review the "weather-proofness" but I'll post up again if it rains/snows on our next outing.

Here's a few pics (sorry some are blurry)

Looks great on your Cruiser.
I have not had a chance yet to take my Maggiolina AirLand out yet, something always comes up when I want to go camping such as this weekend.

I will get it out sometime this summer though...
I will be sure to add pics to this thread.

Thanks for the comments.

If I was going on an extended road trip or living out of my vehicle, I think the Maggiolina would be an awesome tent, but the price of my ARB was right on. It also gives me chance to try out whether I think the RTT is a better alternative to my ground tents. So far, I'm really liking it for car-based camping compared to setting up on the ground.

Nice! FYI: You will want the ladder more vertically orientated than how it is pictured in your photo...

Martin, have you thought about adding an awning to the opposite side of your rig too?

Here is my setup.
Hopefully soon I will have some pics from the great outdoors in it.
I was suppose to go camping this weekend, but something came up.

I agree about the RTT verses a ground tent.
These setup quicker, and the tent is not sitting in rain, and you track in less dirt.

Looking good, I wish there was a way to fit 4 people in them, I like the canopy

Yeah, I was parked in a tight area along a hill in that pic. The ladders need additional holes drilled to "lock" it into more positions. I didn't have my drill with me, otherwise I would have just put in some holes to lock the ladder in a more vertical position. As it was, I had it jambed into the ground fairly secure, and the tent didn't feel like it was unsupported when inside.

Had another opportunity to use the ARB RTT this weekend. The Rising Sun Club did a trip out to the mountains and I had a couple of nights in the tent including some rain. We ran a ton of trails and having the tent on the roof of my 60 was no problem. We had a good thunderstorm pass through the second day and the tent did great in the rain, totally dry inside. I'm liking the RTT more with each use. Some pics:

I have continued to use my Mombasa over and over and trips from Big Bend to my hunting lease to the Rockies. It has held up surprisingly well, and the kids just go bonkers over this thing!

Mombassa worked great for two weeks of rain every day and every night. I sealed EVERY seam and sprayed the fly with silicone before the trip and never a drop inside. The cover sucks and balloons up when driving but I can live with that. It does need a thicker mattress for a 240# 6'2" person.

Mark, the rig looks good and so does your campsite.

One of these days we will have to put our vehicles to the test together in the Sierra Nevada since my Brother failed miserably.

to a nice rig.
