May Big Bear Trip Report
by Paul Thomas
Saturday morning we went to the Gold Pan resturaunt,
had breakfast. Nick Vasquez pulled in. We then went to
Gold Mountain, stopped at a couple mines and trail
rode over to the John Bull trail. We went up the Bull
trail. It's not as difficult as before. The top
"tippy" area has been re-done so it's not as much
pucker factor. We then went to explore some other
areas of interest and work our way over to our adopt a
trail. From the top side the trail has a recently
installed gate blocking access and a sign stating the
trail is closed due to the fire. From the top side
there is no evidence of the fire.

We then took a different trail down to the road that
comes in from Fawnskin. As we approached Camp Wittle
we could see the results of the fire. By the time we
got to Hanna Flats campground it was erie! All the
trees are blackened, the ground is scorched, all the
manzanita bushes are like black fingers sticking out
of the ground. At Hanna Flats campground, which is
closed, most of the restrooms show fire damage, there
is no undergrowth. Some of the picnic tables made it!
We proceeded on. Just past Hanna Flats there is
another gate blocking access to that side of the
mountain. From the looks of it, I'm sure our adopt a
trail is burned out. There will be a lot of work
needed to be done to make it a passable trail again. I
am going to find out who our Forest Service contact is
and see if we can make it a summer 2008 So Cal project
to get the trail opened and cleaned up.

Adopt a Trail Report
By Mark Watkins

I spoke with Greg Hoffman about our USFS Adopt-a-Trail coordinator. He said that our trail is closed because of harvesting and the equipment located throughout the area on our trail. He mentioned the availability of a bigger and much better trail. See info about the trail below. (Mark will try to be at the meeting to explain the new Adopt-a-Trail.)

Holcomb Creek: 3N93Holcomb Creek Trail: Well-known for it's rock garden, heading south from the end of 2N06X will take you right through it. Click to jump to the 3N93 map!

Length: 3 miles
Time to complete: 1 hour

The Lower Larga Trail can be found in the San Bernardino National Forest near Big Bear Lake. The Lower Larga Trail is one of the toughest trails in the SBNF.

The trail is available to street legal vehicles only. You can expect to encounter large boulders. The US Forest Service rates this trail a black diamond most difficult trail and it is not recommended for stock SUVs. Body damage and breakage are a possibility.

Elevation ranges from 6000' to over 6300' and during the winter months snow and ice add to the difficulty of traversing the trail.

The Eastern entrance off 3N93 is N34° 16.876 W117° 00.296.

The Western entrance off 3N16 is N34° 17.359 W117° 02.296

SoCal Club News

Vern Vihlene is developing a new off-road television show and is looking for a few Toyota vehicles to use in the pilot episode. He is inviting three or four of our members to join him on June 18th and 19th for a run over the John Bull trail in Big Bear.

Vern will be at our club meeting this Sunday to explain his needs and talk to us about the new show.
