Upper Coyote Canyon trail report 5-26

I had never done upper Coyote much less all of Coyote prior to it's being partially closed. We all met up this morning and headed off. Appearantly the first part of the trail used to be relatively challenging but it has been graded into what amounts to a fire road now. So we were met with little challenge.

We checked out Baily's cabin and then headed towards trees and some shade for lunch. After lunch we found our way into a wash that definately made up for the disappointment we were greeted with earlier.

There were quite a few challenges for those who volunteered as well as bypasses for anyone who didn't. After all was said and done it turned out to be a great run for me. A great run is usually defined by hanging with good people with similar interests as well as alot of scraping sounds.

So without further blather........here's some pics:

Baily's cabin

The old corral

Gathered up after lunch

The first challenge

Reid making a pretty off camber spot look easy

Sandy on the first challenge

FJC waking a sleeping scorpion

This guy was huge!

Sorry to be a camera hog but this was my big acheivement for the day

Zoey smiling triumphantly

Reid on the way out getting nipped on the rim as well as the flare

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Pic 1 no stacked rocks, then Pic 2 Stacked rocks.....

Seriously, no discredit to your accomplishment, strong work. I just couldn't help myself. That looks like a fun obstacle, I need to go check that area out myself. Great pictures, looks like a fun time. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us saps who didn't get out and do some good wheeling with you guys.

Those pictures were reversed. We had to remove the rocks to make it more challenging for Steve.

^In addition to popping off part of ANOTHER flare, I managed to mangle my relay rod. (nice boomerang!)

Hey Reid

If you are in a bind and need one, i have a perfectly fine spare (ends and all) sitting in my garage that you are welcome to use until you some to your senses and upgrade one of the 2 most vital and exposed parts of your truck!

I run the super beefy Slee stuff and have bounced it off many a boulders, still straight as an arrow on the freeway!

Let me know if you want to swing by and borrow it!

Never heard of it refered to as a "relay rod". Always known of it as a drag link.

Yeah upgrade if you're gonna play in the rocks.. or you'll be like action jackson

I always called it a drag link also, but got all technical and checked the FSM last night. "Relay rod" is what Toyota called it. New to me too.

That was the "advanced route". Most of us took the bypass. Wish I had a least tried this one. A couple of rigs had been through there recently as evident by the BFG Rock Krawler and Goodyear M/T tracks.

I was indeed but I had promised Mangler he could have my grill and we were doing the 93-97 front end swap. Damn, could have gone wheeling.

Its referred to as a "Drag Link" on Jeeps and such

Every Solid Axle cruiser ever made refers to it as a Relay Rod!

Has something to do with no being connected to the same spot as the tie rod like most vehicles.

Pickups and Runners as well.

Funny you should ask. It really didn't feel good on the way out when I was on the low side but on the way back, when I was on the high side, it felt totally stable. Go figure.
