you can use said can's but you can not sell them.... you can buy them out of state but have to drive them in, no one can ship them to you.

Hmmm. 1 gal gasoline ~ 6.25 lbs. x 5 gallon capacity x 7 cans = 218.75 lbs not including the weight of each can. Plus what you add to the rack in terms of gear. I don't doubt that it'd be easy to top 1K lbs up there. Oh well, not trying to wet blanket anyone, just something to consider while your driving. It looks cool though.

Yeah Smit, i still want a aux tank too. So i'll have plenty of fuel.

I bought my NATO cans from a army surplus store here locally. As long as they aren't NEW you can buy them here in CA. IF they are BRAND NEW.. you'll have to have them shipped to a buddy out of state and then back. OR... somehow convince them you aren't using it for fuel, but rather for appearance of a old military rig or something.

The ones i picked up have never even been used and i can drink out of them. Got them at American Army Surplus in Placentia, CA.. they have pallets of very nice ones. I paid $14 a can (great price considering new are $45)

You can also, buy them over the interenet at Coleman Surplus for about the same price, but shipping costs a fortune. They wanted $77 bucks to ship 7 to me from back east.

No way man, i hear you loud and clear.. i broke out the calculator before i went to pick them up.. i was thinking the same thing... NO FAST LANE CHANGES!!!! lol

I'll have 2 ice chests up there for the death valley trip.. we'll see.. some definate testing of 'top heavy' situations in the next two weeks for sure. The spares are going back down on the dual tire carrier soon anways.

If i ever take it rockcrawling, or any serious trails.. it will be locally anyways, so i wont have them up there.. this is primarily for long hauls.

I am all for having more fuel than anticipated because you never know. I was just giving you some isht. I do like the way your rig is turning out, form and function.

Dave - super sweet! I had an out of state mud buddy purchase a couple of the new non-carb compliant cans and then 'get' them to me.

Dave, look at the super siphon that Expedition Exchange in Torrance carries. That and the extension they carry will allow you to avoid taking those down. Alvaro and others have them and I've seen them used. Nice little hose to have along.

Very inexpensive. They wouldn't sell me the non-carb spout in CA. They had been backordered when 'my friend' ordered the gas cans. I just ordered the spout w/o problem from some place in TX. I did go ahead and get the siphon. It does work as advertised.

That's dumb they won't sell the spout. Because the law only applies for cans that are new.... so if i have OLD cans and my spout goes bad , i cant buy a spout for them? I already own the cans..! dumb CA. Where'd you order the spout? link?

Yep, I thought it was kind of stupid as well. I told them I already owned the cans and just needed to 'replace' the spout and they wouldn't sell me one. Their loss on that one.

I had owned one Shitz carb compliant can and that damn lid and spout leaked like a broken dam. So much for cleaner air with gas leaking all over just from the bouncing offroad and while pouring.

Don't know if the Wedco carb compliant is any better, but I got my hands on a couple of Wedco noncarb cans. Nothing but good said about those.

Midway Auto. http://midwayautosupply.com/p-32548-...red-80792.aspx

They do make the statement about not being able to ship the metal cans into the Republic of Kalifornia and other places, but make no such statement about the spouts. Expedition Exchange does make the statement about the spouts as well as the cans. Go figure.

also wondering, if you lay a can like that on its long side (as in the pic) and want to be able to open it while still laying down, how much of the capacity do you lose? are they more like 4 gallons then?

Good eye, I wonder if not the gas cans it might be the tightness of the tree limb cables going to the ARB?

IIRC, Alvaro only fills his to about 4 gallons so he can leave them on their side and be able to use the super shiphon w/o spilling gas all over the roof!

Best way would be to just fill the damn thing on it's side Eric. That way you don't over fill. hehehe
