Easier to lift 4 gallons, than lift and remove 5 gallons and use a spout tho! On their side and filled that way not to spill, you can use a siphon and extension and just refuel with the cans still on the rack! Would be a PITA to refuel the cans from gas pump with them already up there. Muscle up Eric!

I know you can't fill gas cans in the bed of your truck because of static electricity causing a fire. You are supposed to fill them on the ground. Is this only for plastic cans or does the fact that they are on a rack with open air all around them make this not an issue?

This is mainly for plastic cans and the drop-in bed liners which together obviously make the static electricity. Shouldn't be a factor with metal cans and metal rack.

If the air is dry, Santa Ana's, and you rubbed yourself all over your cloth seats (.00001% US cruisers have those) and climb up without touching the ground or any part of the truck untill you are pumping gas and have created some fumes then touch near the filler neck, maybe. Otherwise Dave should be fine.

I know that's an INTI with the special slot, but I think I'd put my cans in the back on my rack. Much easier to fill...

well, I got a few cans, thanks to Smit.
I like them. (Definitely not new, though. These are older ones that have been repainted - over the dings. But good seals and insides look freshly repainted too.)
I did rinse them off and filtered the gas the first use.
Got a noticeable amount of very fine crap.
You might want to clean yours too...

yes, orange paint.

come to think of it, the idea of siphoning from the cans directly into the tank is problematic, especially if you get gas from some backwoods place, in that you could suck dirt from the cans and dump it directly in the tank. I'll see if I can put an inline filter in the siphon hose...

I dont run that gas, i fill up the gerry cans in civilization 1st.. but.. you have a point. This can also be said for any off road gas can. Dirt bike, atv's etc. I guess i'd be careful about it.

well, I had to get a can full of gas from a backcountry barrel recently in Baja cuz I was concerned about not making it back to a main station. Problem with that is you have no idea what it is. For all I know it could have been leaded gas that would have poisoned my cats. Could have had sand or whatnot in it too. I didn't use it and kept it separate and used it for my lawnmower but the risk is there.

(I'll skip the story about how the 5 gallons of (very expensive) gasolina didn't quite fill my 5 gals can to the level line... )

Definitely good to be carefull with the backwoods Pemex as the in town stuff is questionable in and of itself. Those same "stations" can also be a real lifesaver. All this talk makes me want a longranger aux tank like Mangler.

It will be awhile for me also, I will keep the idea of a group buy open and throw it out again sometime next year.

an advantage of the long range tank for Baja adventurers is that it's a bit more discrete than the cans on the roof....
