New headlights and wiring

Anybody have any experience with replacing stock headlights and the wiring? I got some stuff from ARB but I've been a little intimidated by the project. Like most things its probably pretty easy once you get into it but thought somebody might have some advice.

I have the 4Crawler harness and some E code lenses, and they rock! The harness I have doesn't replace the stock one, is just plugs into it. Yes, it was simple!

Yes. I replaced the lenses, bulbs and harness in the xj with the arb stuff. Easy enough, just think out where you want to mount the relays. The improvement is night and day!

In the 80 I have the upgraded harness and the John Deere hid upgrade. Not as huge of a difference but still a good upgrade. Also an easy upgrade.

Slight nitpick, but the John Deere's are HIR's, not HID's.

They are availible through the Floyd A. Boyd company out on highway 62, between Costco and White City. They will need to order them most likely. Took 2-3 days for mine to come in.

They gave me list price on them, which is not cheap. Plan on spending $70-80 for a set.

One advantage to them is that they simply last a very long time. I run my lights all the time (even in daylight) and have had them for quite a while now, they've lasted longer than a couple of sets of the generic aftermarkets. A couple people report using them 2-3 years (with running them during daylight hours) and they're still lasting.


HID swaps are availible for newer trucks, but not cheap. If you want to do it right, plan on spending $600+. I'd love to do HID's, but can't justify the expense.



Jellio, I believe you have a 60, yes? Not sure if the HIR's will swap in or if HID upgrades are even availible.

I already bought the IPF lights and the ARB harness. What do you guys mean when you say think out where you want to mount the relays? I guess I thought I would be connecting the new harness into the new bulbs/lights and running it back to the firewall.

-Jelliott- I'm not sure what harness you have in front of you but if it's similar to the above unit it ought to connect your lights directly to the battery with the relays using the light selector in the column as the low volt signal to keep the big draw out of that part.

I'm running the Slee harness and some HIR's. I didn't test just the harness vs. the stock one so can't comment on the overall benefit.

I love my IPF e-code lenses but I don't have a new harness. Something for later I guess.

There are three relays that you will need to mount somewhere in the engine compartment. Basically with this set up:

You plug your existing harness into the new harness. Your existing system becomes the switch for the new one.

You connect your new harness to your battery and new bulbs.

Mount the relays and you are done.

I ran the 90/110 bulbs and was very happy with the amount of light I put out. I never got flashed by on coming cars because the IPF lenses have a very good cutoff. You will be very happy with your new lights.
