Elk in applegate unit?

Well, I'm back from Boise finally, and for good this time. I've missed most of the hunting season cut-offs but still have the Coast Bull general seasons in November. I've never hunted in the Applegate unit (in fact, I'm pretty new to hunting at all). Any decent areas out there that folks don't mind sharing info on? I haven't even made up my mind if I'll be going or not, just would like a heads up to the area. From looking at the maps it looks like it is pretty cut up with roads.

I'll pm you my phone #. Call me and I will give you some info. The Applegate unit is officially an Elk deemphises (sp?) zone. They are there and I would not hesitate to hunt them. You will need a BLM map that shows private property. You will have to hunt pockets of BLM land if you want to be sucsessfull. There is some NF property that holds elk in there but not as regular as the private property and BLM land.

So as noted in the hunting rules and regulations, private property is supposed to be marked according to certain methods and frequencies but I am wondering how obligated the hunter is to know if he is on public vs. private land where there are not fences or marking?

I think it's pretty much no hunting on private land without permission, period.

Technically you would be trespassing and such. AFAIK it's up to the person to know whether he's still on public land or not.

Now if you're on someone's back 40 acres, and 100 feet over the line, I doubt anyone's going to care. If you're 100 feet away from their house.....

There are many ways to mark private property. Including ditching, blazing, posting and many others. The key is that you need to know where public is before you go. If not you will likely get into trouble. It is up to you as a hunter to know, and be able to prove, you are on public property. I say be able to prove it because I do know of some land owners that are posting public property adjasent to thier property.
