60 welcomes me home
I went to move my rig and after some horrible noises, smoke and after doing a search on MUD it sounds like my leaking power steering pump may have done in my smog pump. @$%&%@!!!!

Sort of open to all ideas. I would love to put a diesel engine in sometime in the next few years so I'm not really wanting to dump a bunch of money into things I might be getting rid of anyway. I'm thinking I need to also address the box/pump while I'm at it. Does anyone know of someone really good I could use? I was thinking of calling Ray Houck in the morning not really a LC guy but a great honest mechanic I've used in the past.

Jesse I just did my power steeering pump and smog pump all in one shot. Very easy to do, get everthing from C-dan, new power steering pump was $300. I wish I would of kept my old smog pump so you could gut it, but I threw it out. This is an easy weekend job with all the parts.

Josh,
Did you gut your smog pump, buy a new one or get a pulley?
Thanks -

I put a reman PS pump on the white 60 I had and at $100+ and a lifetime warranty it worked fine from Jiffy. I am a big fan of OEM but the high price tag is prohibitive in some cases.
I was really impressed by how well the same vehicle ran after being desmogged.

I've read the reman PS pumps sometimes don't last too long which concerns me. I would love to do the desmog but how long should I plan to take to do it? If I have to send things to Jim C or Mark Offroad the wait time is a hang up for me. The LC is my daily driver so this week is going to be a hassle as it is. I would love to have some advice and/or help when I decide to pull the trigger though.

There's some really good tech threads about desmogging the 60's. Have you looked through those yet?

Jesse, I spent the money on a new oem smog pump. It was not cheap but I figured the last one lasted this long, so I'm thinking this one will last. I have also heard about the reman power steering pumps, they are cheap, go oem. It's worth the money. Josh

I appear to have two options:
#1 OEM smog pump $1100, OEM power steering pump $388, Rebuilt power steering box by Mark OffRoad $325 and hope nothing else goes wrong with the smog stuff.
#2 OEM power steering pump $388, Rebuilt power steering box by Mark OffRoad $325, Pulley to replace smog pump $100, complete desmog which should also include a carb rebuild $350 by Mark OffRoad.
#3 Tell my wife somehow the engine is toast and I really need to do the 12 HT diesel conversion now instead of later as planned.
Anyone see anything wrong or something I'm missing about option #2 because that is the direction I'm leaning at the moment. Only down side is the time to tear down, shipping, rebuild time and putting it all back together again.
PS Kief since you're the desmog master now I might need some guidance with this.

I personally lean towards option #2 or #3.
If I had a 12 HT diesel sitting there, it'd probably be going in. If the diesel wasn't quite ready yet, then option 2.

You'll get the smog pump for 800 through C-DAN, not much savings. If you could do the diesel thing go for that. I'm calling DIBS on engine parts when you swap.

Option 4: PS pump $whatever, gut your smog pump (1hour -including removal and installation) free or maybe some RTV and two freeze plugs, retune your own carb and save the Jim or mark rebuild for later. (or put it off like I have for the last 4 years).
