Things to be done before Mcgrew

Well tonight, I made a decision. I'm starting a laundry list of things that I hope I can get done before Mcgrew. I have projects that have been nagging the hell out of me for some time now. I'm going to replace my power steering pump, smog pump, oil pan gasket, Front and rear pinons and out put seals. Going to undercoat the complete underside of the cruiser. I'm going to try to get this done all while I'm working on the landscaping of my house, cutting wood for next winter, having a third child, keeping the wife and kids happy, and did I mention fire season. This is going to be and hour a day here and there to get it done. I have a new to me rear bumper coming from Dirtgypsy, and plan to order parts from c-dan on friday.

What do you suggest for an undercoating, I'm not looking to get fancy just to clean-up the underside. Would flat black spray work?

Anyways I'm goin to keep tabs of my progress in this tread. So tonight I got the hood waxed, and passenager side tire off, so I could start preping the the undercoating. I told you it would take a while.

My plan B for Mcgrew is to show up in my tundra again, not looking forward to that. This is all dependent on when the third child is born, but I do have the green light as of now.

For undercoating, a flat black spray does work.

Personally, I'd look at Spectrum. (Spectrum - Acoutic Sound Deadener Coating Material) The price is a bit spendier, but it'll do a very good job at reducing noise and vibrations.

If all you want is rust proofing, though...just get Rustoleum semi-gloss black, and spray the crap out of it.

I bought a can of 3m rubber spray stuff, thought I test it out. Not sure how well it works, but seems pretty nice.

did my arches (deflared) with duplicolor truck bed coating, I am pleased with the results, I think it would be good under the truck; sets up quickly and hard, durable.

Well got a little bit more done this evening. Took out the front shock and started cleaning up the frame and front housing with a wire wheel and wire brush.

I tried some flat black spray out on some of the areas I cleaned up. I think I will go that route, it looked pretty decent.It hasn't had anything like this done since 84, so its better then nothing. I know it is the cheapo way out but it will accomplish what I need. Thanks for the input. Oh and i got front passenger side fender waxed woo-hoo Progress baby progress.

If you are consistent and do at least a little here and there, say, instead of getting on the internet or watching TV you'd be amazed at how it ads up.. I lasted about a week and a half being consistent..

I'm a fan of the Duplicolor (Harbor Freight carries it pretty cheap) but one thing to be aware of is that it dries pretty hard. I have some chips in my from gravel (though my tires tend to throw a lot).

Not hard to touch up, just something to be aware of.

Anyways progress tonight was getting the frame painted from the front wheel well to the start of the rear. I only got the side showing, because my plan is that before I change out the oil pan is to take it to work and borrow the steam cleaner and remove as much grease that I can with that instead of by hand. So far so good. No major problems and a good thing is that there is no ROT. Also got the passenger side doors waxed. (I got crazy tonight, and went after two doors)

The plan is to get the rear bumper removed next and continue on the undercoating. Ordering parts on Friday.

Well last night I got the rear bumper off. It always seems like it is going so well until the last carriage bolt. I got every bolt off pretty easy, they zipped right off until the last one. Then it took about an hour to get the last one. I Finally had to break out the air chisel and use a little more force then before, but it finally came. Anyways behind the lower portion of the center of the bumper was some flaking of the frame. I chiseled off the loose stuff and cleaned it up. No holes or anything, still solid. It just goes to show vehicles this old are going to have something hiding.

Got the parts ordered today from c-dan, the air pump hurt the pocket book. It better be made of gold. Good progress today, I have all of the outside of the frame painted all the way to the drivers side wheel well. I'm going to start getting the old power steering pump out next with the smog pump.

Thanks Ty, I'm trying to have completed before Mcgrew. Fire Season has started slow this year which is fine by me.

I started into removing the the power steering today, tore into the air box and got it removed and a few hoses. I'll be placing another order with c-dan on Friday for some more replacement parts. I need to source out an "AIR BYPASS VLV". As I was removing a hose from one of the nipples and it was pretty rusted out. I'm not sure what it does, and i'm not sure if it is even broken. I looked at it on the SOR webesite and a new one is way out of my price league. I about choked when I saw the price. I got an ad in the wanted section, and I"ll PM kief to see if he has one. Hopefully parts will be here this week. Josh

Still waiting on parts, so last night I got some vacuum hoses replaced that I had missed with the air cleaner on. Going to make a parts order tomorrow for some things. Won't get much done this weekend, since I will be in Nevada fishing.

Well, got my sliders in last night. I was going to slap them on, but decided knowing me i would never get around to taking them off to repaint. Since they got here a week earlier decided to bite the bullet and strip them down and paint. Countdown is on till McGrew!

That's one use for old boxes.

How far are you stripping down? Just wire wheel on the rusty parts, or are you going to try and get to bare metal all over?

Don't leave them outside overnight. They might disappear. (Though they'd show back up after the pre-run. Probably.)

No powder coating that I can tell. I used a spray aircraft stripper stuff from Napa, 20mins later is pretty much what you see in the pic with a putty knife. Stuff pretty much just liquifies. Almost could just wipe it off with a rag. Im not concerned about the remaining paint that didnt come off. Just going to wire wheel the rusty spots, scuff/sand and primer then coat.

EDIT: ya powder coating sucks to remove. The aircraft stripper stuff will eat through it, but takes a couple times, and is just nasty stuff. Wire brushing the "good" parts of the coating is futile. May see about having them sandblasted real quick.

Ooh ya, we caught some good fish. We were fishing in a lake that used to be off limits to fishing before 1998. It was a Brood stock lake for Nevada. They crossed a Lahaton Cutthroat with a Rainbow and it becomes a CutBow. It is a great fighting trout. The majority of the fish were in the 15 to 18 inch range. No pictures because I practice catch and release and Its hard to get pictures when you are in a pontoon boat by yourself.

The weather on the other hand, was not normal for the Nevada desert. It rained the whole time pretty much. We almost got stuck on the way out, it was a wet weekend. When you are catching fish who cares.
