McGrew Trail with Lost Coat 4x4's

Most of us were pretty excited about this club run. For some, it would be their first 4x4 run.
I over packed as usual and headed north around 6 a.m. Stopped at Walmart in CC and called Carl to see where he was.
Trouble. Carl's O2 sensor had popped out up the road. Possible bad threads on the manifold. After trying to find a repair shop open(right, on Saturday), we met at Two Guys(not open) and headed over to Kragen. Boy, they don't know jack.
Carl bought some supplies and made a 'field fix' on the sensor.

Off we went to Obrien. A bit late but still on the road. After briefing the rest of the club we headed up the the trail where we aired down.

Onward and upward.
I ran the big boulder(don't know the name of that spot) which I call the 'non-by pass' section and popped off the right front bumper tip again though not on the tree this time.

Next was Joe who made it with little trouble.
Then Brad. He gave it a go but couldn't quite get over. Carl, is that spotting or just running?

Carl was (as usual) going to show us how it's done. He did well but got a little bouncy, broke a motor mount (aluminum) and smashed the oil filter and puked oil.

Moved Carl up to a spot where we could work on the rig and began to plot our repair.
Bruce and Julie high-tailed it back to Obrien and then Cave Junction to get filters and oil while the rest jacked up the engine and strapped it to a log suspended from cowl to rad support. It worked.

Bruce and Julie got back with the supplies and on when the filter and in went the oil. Fired up and didn't puke. Good so far.
Carl got turned around and he, Scott and Brad and Carmen headed back down the trail, gingerly Carl says, and made it back to Eureka by 7ish without a tow.
Good job guys.
Mean while, Russ, Joe/Kathy and Bruce/Julie continued on to Sourdough.

We fed Joe a few lumpy spots as he wanted to 'articulate' more.

Kind of blasted through mostly except for a few stops for Joe, pics and stretching. Said our good bye's to Bruce and Jule at the saddle.
Cruised down to Sourdough in the dark and found the camp empty. Took the first camp that looked good and set up.
Threw up the tents and had a very nice dinner of marinated steaks and shrimp and green beans. Very nice.
A little chat by the camp fire and bed by 11ish.
We took our time in the morning and after we packed we toured Sourdough Camp which I've not done. Joe and Kathy liked the camp and would like to come again.

Off we went up the trail to the saddle where we met a guy from Eureka named Nin. Quite the rig he had. Well outfitted.

Up the road to we went. Stopped along side the road to show Joe and Kathy the carnivorous plant that grows here and then at the North Fork campground to look around.
The rest of the trip to the highway was dusty and uneventful.
Contacted Carl by phone at the highway to see what had transpired with his group. We were chomping at the bit to find out. All was well with him so we stopped by Walmart(again) and headed our separate ways home.
Great trip but for the trouble with Carl's rig. Too bad everyone wasn't able to make it to Sourdough. Next time.
Whew!

I think he was asking how the Montero did since we don't see them on the trail.

Ah, the Montero. It did well for a vehicle with only a larger tire mod. Except for the rock 'of ill-repute' that he did not try, he did well and better than the blue wrangler overall.
This is the 3rd time on the McGrew for Bruce and the Montero.

Right. No, wait. We do understand. That's why we drive Toyotas.

But it was fun.

Funny Russ, you should run it backwards to even up your front bumpers..lol

The Rubicon was a blast. I scored some damage in the old sluice. Tore up my sort top and have a nice dent in my drivers side just behind the door...not real happy about that. I was the only Toyota in the bunch...as usual. I now have more steering issues and probs with my suspension. Oh well.
You need to get your rig ready for it and we'll go in the spring.

Backwards isn't as fun they say. I'll even up that silly bumper. I'm going to take the other tip off.
Too bad about your damage. Guess it's to be expected.
Not sure I want to go until I get a little more armor. We'll see.
Good to hear from you.
See you soon,

Went back up to the McGrew today and cleaned up the mess we made last week.
We shoveled, scooped and washed.
I spiked my tire just as we got there and we all heard the 'cat hiss' as I received a 3" slice in the side wall. Very similar to my 06 trip to Mono Lake.
What with the gas, lunch and the tire, it turned out to be a bit expensive for us today but felt it worth while as Lost Coast has a good rep and we want to keep that up.

Good pics Russ. It was a good day and that patch of cobra's was awsome. It must of been 50 to 60' long and about 20' across. I was waiting for them to send out some tentacles and grab one of us and suck us in..lol
It was a good day...
