how about trying out a VTA - SBA ham contact one of those evenings?
might even work in simplex given the coast...
I can hear the Oamarillo airport in that direction

well, I was on the top of the coastal mountains yesterday near SB and I was able to hear the Oxnard and Pt Mugu airports...
Didn't hear Paul, though... I thought he'd be on 24/7 nowadays...
