Will be looking for minitruck disk brake swap set-up in near future

After the issue with my knuckle studs after the snow run, I will need to upgrade to a mini truck knuckle and disk brake set-up by the time we do Calico.

Since Xmas was last month, my wife and I need to put out the fire on the credit card before I can really buy any Cruiser stuff so at this moment, I cannot purchase what I need. But, hopefully in the next two months or so, I will be able to afford the swap.

So keep that in mind if anyone comes across a mini truck axle that I could swap the parts over. I hope to find an axle in good enough shape that I will not have to buy new rotors (just resurface them) and would like to spend around 200 bucks in the end. Although I may need to spend more up front and sell the mini truck axle housing to recoup some money.

Maybe around the end of March, if you hear of anything, let me know. In the mean time, if parts for the swap pop-up (knuckles, birfs, what ever) let me know and maybe I could start to gather a few parts as long as the cost isn’t too high.

From what I gather this is a list of parts I will need:
FRONT AXLE (79-85 Truck Knuckles)
Calipers
Rotors
Ft brake flex hose
Steering Arms
Kuckle Bearings
Brake Pads
Lock Washer
Axle seal
Seal kit
Inner wheel Bearing
Inner wheel Bearing Race
Outer wheel Bearing
Outer wheel Bearing Race
Mini Truck Axle

Talk to Georg (orangefj45), He can at least get you your consumables and may have some knuckles? Fresno isn't too far from stockton right?

There is an ifs hub conversion you can do to the minis, gives you a little more width at the wms iirc, but what you're looking for is the knuckles so the ifs stuff won't help you like Cacy said.

What's different about the cruiser knuckles vs. the minis that you want?

I haven't wheeled with you so I don't know what you like to do but you may be trading one weak link for another. The j-arm on mini steering is not very ideal for what we do unless you have the stock torque rod, but that itself limits articulation. I could imagine a heavier rig putting a lot of stress on those little things.

Either Cruiser (60 series or after 77 FJ40) swap between mini truck knuckles. As far as everyone tells me, this will work sufficiently for 35s and a locker.

I don't wheel like Cacy - With a lead foot , but I stuff like the Rubicon. My only thing is prefer to have a rig in the same mechanical condition as I left, so I don't mind takng an easier route.

oh now I have a lead foot. You have really never wheeling with me othet than sand and now. On both those you have to have a lead foot especially if you are breaking trail. To let you know, I have ran the rubicon, almost every trail in shaver, and the hammers with very little breakage. The things I did break were because of pinion angle or they were not setup right, not because of a lead foot. When I am on rocks I go sloooow.

The j-arm doesn't break due to a lead foot, it breaks due to the stresses put on it by articulation and the geometry of the set up. For example like pinion angles and such. A birf is strong until you get slammed over to one side.

Oh and if that IFS stuff was v6 you can take the calipers and upgrade the front w/the mini knuckles to 4 piston if you get some rotors from a 60.

Same as drivelines, they last good until they bind up. Actually I believe 77 and up cruiser are still the small bolt pattern. The easiest and cheapest way would be a mini truck conversion with high steer. Yes it will cost some money, but it is worth knowing it is safe.

I 2nd that, and a caliper upgrade wouldn't hurt either.

Jerry has the set up that I hope to get, but will either go all mini or all cruiser.

I'm just messing with you Casy. I needed someone to make a comparision to. I dig your rig and how it is set up.

Why go all cruiser or all mini, take the best of both worlds. The parts are just bolt on, you don't have to modify anything to slap the bigger calipers and 60 rotors on the mini knuckles

true. It will all come down to when I have the money and what I can get my hands on.

This pulled together sooner than I thought. I was able to get a complete FJ60 axle for a good price. So I will have everything besides the stuff I need for the brake swap forsale if anyone wants anything.

IF only it had 4.10 gears. (I think 60s came with 3.73?) I would outboard my spring mounts to fit the axle right under my rig. It would proabbly takeless time to do that then swap the brakes over.

Now I need to find the time to get it done before Calico.

I just installed a rear disc brake setup from allpro. Finally I have brakes that will stop my runner. One of the best upgrades I have made.
