Mounting my winch - curious

Just curious. I've searched the FAQ's and a bunch of threads and can't find a suitable answer. Maybe one of you guys knows.

I've seen winches mounted "feet down", that is, bolted underneath the mounting plate ... and also "feet vertical" where the winch is mounted to the vertical plate or the vertical plane of the bumper.

It seems to me ... ... that "feet vertical" would be the strongest mount. Because the housings, are cast metal, the winching load would be against the winch mounting plate, not the winch housing. In the "feet down" scenario, the winching load is trying to pull the winch housing free of the mounting bolts.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?

I have all of mine in the feet vetical position. They are bolted to heavey rigs and when a heavy rig gets stuck you want the winch bolted properly.

I also have never seen a caasting break in the feet vertical position. I have only seen 4 or 5 in the feet down position brake the casting.

I have mine in the feet down position and have never had a problem. I winched a lifted quad cab 2007 Chevy in the snow last winter and held up fine.

Looks we have a tie! Anybody care to be the tie-breaker?

Actually, I had a "brainstorm" at work and decided to call Warn. The Warn guy recommends mounting the M12000 in the "feet vertical" position. He said the casting would "probably" hold at max load if "feet down", but said the unit was designed for "feet vertical", he also said that a "shock load" in the "feet down" position puts HUGE stresses on the casting. Again, we were talking about the M12000. I don't know if that is true for other Warn models, or not.

Thanks for the responses!

Dragging someone though snow is a whole lot different than pulling someone out of mud when it is over thier axles.

I made some "Winch Load" cards for everyone, that I'm gonna pass out at Tuesday's meeting. The "quick reference" cards give you idea of what kind of of weight (load) you are attempting to winch, in different circumstances.

New bumper for winch

Ok, so I've gone round and round and decided to also build a new bumper to get this winch mounted. I may also attempt the air storage/bumper idea. I "borrowed" some ideas from various posts here on Mud.

The bumper will be ST 2"x5"x1/4" w/ 1/4"thk end plates.
The Shackle mounts will be FB 2"x2"x1-1/4"thk.
The tube bar will be 1-1/4".
The push bars will FB 1-1/4"thk. I can bolt the winch to this flatbar, in the "feet vertical" position.

Here's a sketch:

Nice!

Are you going to sue the bumper that came with it or do you still maybe want to sell it?

Sell! If you want it, I'll throw it in the truck and take it to the meeting tonight. Call me if so. 661-203-4998

Finally! My Bumper is completed.

The final product is a little different than the original design ... but fully functional!

Sorry I didn't get any pics of the actual fab process.

Thanks guys, glad it meets your approval.

The bumper is ST (square tube) 2x5 x 1/4.
The upper winch mounts are ST2x2 x 1/4.
The recovery points are FB (flatbar) 1-1/4 x 2.
The plate is 3/'16thk (on the ends of the bumper ... around the cable opening ... and at the upper winch mounts.
All the bolt holes, thru the bumper, have a 3/8" thru-pipe welded in ... so the bumper is air-tight ... it can be used as an air tank.
The bumper mounting bolts are Grade 8, cad plated, and the winch mounting bolts are Gr5 (I couldn't find the correct length, so I settled ... just to get the winch mounted).

After fab was completed, I sand-blasted it ($99 tank from Harbor Freight) ... rattle canned grey primer, and then 5 coats of rattle can hammered black, sanded between coats. I s**k at painting, but it came out OK.

Everything was MIG'd except the recovery points, which were TIG'd.

Yeh, TIG is stronger!

TIG stands for :"TOUGH" INERT GAS welding
MIG stands for: "MILD" INERT GAS welding

JUST KIDDING !!!!! I better not not any serious responses on this!

Actually,
TIG stands for: "The inspector General", and we all know how tough he is! And MIG stands for : "MIND IN GUTTER" .... or is it "Made In Germany"?
