SVO/WVO/greasecar kits on a JDM 80??

hi guys, thought i'd ask this here since the the greatest numbers of hdj81 owners are most likely in BC/vancouver. so, any of you with a jdm 80, or other LC for that matter, have or looked into running SVO or WVO in your diesels? spoke to a very knowledgeable guy from greascar out in massachusettes(sp?) and he sayss it should be a pretty straight forward install, provided that the veggie oil is clean and free of bacteria and water...

just wanted your opinions on this, pros and cons...i'm guessing the pros outweigh the cons?? after the initial start up cost and making sure i have a trusted/reliable source for WVO, it's a win win situation in the long run no? there's a local place that even sells ready to use WVO for .60cents/litre, i'd even just pay them and skip the home brew/filter stuff in a garage that i don't have yet...

just not sure tho, someone mentioned something about wax build up, IP issues, and i know you gotta start and end in diesel and you gotta factor in purge times, etc... I asked about IP issues but was told that WVO is not corrosive like biodiesel which contain alchohol and can damage the pre 94 non vitton type seals, etc... guess we're looking at the heavy duty kits for diesel trucks...

i may just consider this to be the first major mod before lift and bumpers (etc.) and since i'm still in a condo, those will wave to wait anyway...and with these ridiculous diesel prices...i'm leaning more towards cheaper greener alternatives....

so anyone run anything similar on your 81?!

Greasecar Vegetable Fuel Systems

or

PlantDrive™ International - vegetable oil fuel system, gas alternative, biodiesel

thanks.
romey

Actually I would talk with the guys in Salmon Arm BC, Plant Drive. I have talked with the owner and he seems like a good guy. I want to install one of his kits soon in my BJ60.

At least then you're getting if from a Canadian distributer.

ah cool! thanks for the link bb! all i could find here was one installer but i think he's waay out of town and he's not listed on the greascar site, had to get them to give me his location...

maybe i'll plan a visit to salmon arm (and who knows, coordinate an install sometime down the road), i'd love to hear how things work out on your 60 if you get it done!

there's gotta be at least ONE dude with an 80 running on veg......?!

did you go to the diesel section and look in the sub forum for alternate fuels? It is the place on mud for this. The clubs are fine to ask info from, but in the alternate fuels section you get more hits I'm sure.

The plant drive set up looks quality as far as I can tell, I gotta wait till I have some scratch before I can get a kit.

yup, been checkin lots there too, but haven't come acroos a 1HDT running on veg yet. didn't notice too many posts from the aussies/newzies with hdj81's either...will keep looking.

but yeah, gotta earn me some scracth too first. hopefully this thing will pay for itself in a year or two, THEN i'll start savin up for all the other standard mods...

but yeah, the plant drive system looks pretty thorough and well built.

this guy was selling his veggie oil converted HDJ81 back in nov when i first started looking for a cruiser. took it out for a test drive..and he explained his whole process. his name is eric...quite a knowledgeable guy...he even showed me his setup that processes the fuel in his shed. quite extensive. not sure if he still has his cruiser, but im sure he's converted his sprinter to run on veggie as well. cant remember where he got his kit from...i think somewhere in WA

his contact info is on his website...he might be up for some cruiser veggie oil chat...

ah kewl, no worries, i'll call the site anyway, and i might even suggest their tours for a conference that i'm hopefully attending in vancouver next year. looks like they just have the diesel vans for the tours...

question is, who bought the LC and is THAT person on mud?! wonder if it's running strong and reliably out there....

I think I will have to contact him to find out about the conversion, we are running a Sprinter at work and I would not mind doing something like that to it. If you get to him before I do let me know if he is willing to share his wisdom.

heard back from the plandrive guys in canmore, he said he's done 2 more hdj81's with svo/wvo mods (for a total of 3 at his shop), so far so good i'm told. will get more detailed info this weekend...so far it sounds promising, i'm just dreading to hear about the cost. but that 200$ aluminum tank that a fellow mudder used for his wvo/svo kit on his cummin's powered 80 is lookin saweet...
