3.4 V6 Conversion

I have a 91 4Runner with the 3.0 V6 that I want to swap in a 3.4 V6 from a 96 4Runner donor vehicle. I have found some info on Yota Tech and other sites, but is there anyone in the PHX/TUS area that has knowledge of this process.

Any shops that have done these in the past? I am in the Tucson area. Thanks, Terry

I'm actually starting to do this swap myself, planned it as a winter project. I have a 90 4Runner with a tired 3.0L and 5-speed trans. I found a donor 3.4L from a 95 T100 with a manual trans.

What trans does your Runner have?

Because I found a 3.4L from a T100, I don't have to fool with the oil pan or dipstick mods.

Let me know if you have any questions!

I bought a wrecked 96 4Runner with a 5-speed (rollover) going into a 91 4Runner with a 5-speed (both R150F Transmissions) but I have an 85 solid axle conversion with a Marlin Transfer Case that will go on the new transmission.
I am just in the process of dismantling the 96 now. The only info I have is from Yota Tech and the old ORS site. I wish they were still in business. Any guidance you can give would be appreciated. Terry

Hey Terry,

It's good that you got a donor with the same R150F manual trans as your 91, it will make your wiring mods easier.

But since the 96 has the rack-and-pinion steering under the engine, the oil pan sump will be in front (right in the way of your straight axle conversion!) instead of the rear like your 91 (which has a steering box/tie rod/drag link setup). So you'll have to use the pan and oil pump pickup from your 91 or a T100 and modify the 3.4L block for a dipstick in a different location.

Here's my favorite 3.4L swap link, excellent writeup and good pics:

Andy Zooks Home Page - Life, Toyota 4x4s and more - Toyota 3.4L Engine Swap - Replacing the 3.0L

I'm probably going to use Andy's suggestion for the exhaust. On the 3.0L I had Downey Headers with custom exhaust down both side, crossing over to the driver's side after the transfer case then out the back. With Downey closing down recently, no one really makes regular headers for the 3.4 without a crossover between the engine and the firewall to the passenger side. As you know, the passenger side on our older rigs have the starter and clutch slave cylinder (if you use the 3.0 bell housing), both of which don't like heat. Then, with the fuel tank on the passenger side as well, you would still need a crossover back to the driver's side anyway after the transfer case to get the exhaust out the back. So, notice that Andy Zook, just retained the stock exhaust manifold's without the factory 3.4L crossover to the passenger side, then took the engine to a local muffler shop (I'll be using Mesa Muffler here in the Phx area - they do great custom work) and have them build a custom crossover to the DRIVER'S side using the flanges which you remove from the factory pass side crossover. Then it's just a straight shot all the way back on the driver's side. I guess you could do the same thing with a set of 3.4L headers, cutting the flanges off their pass side crossover, but I think i'll save the $800 or so for headers and put it toward a new rebuilt R150F from Marlin with a 5.15:1 first gear to go with my 4.7 Marlin tcase.

Brian

Brian, thanks for the link. I will likely follow your lead on the crossover pipe. The wiring is the issue. Note in Kevin's link above, there is a link to a Toyota site you can join and download wiring diagrams.
The R150F on the 96 is slightly different and a bit longer than on my 91.

I also have the 4.88 gears and while a bit boggy with the 3.0, I think they will be fine with the 3.4. I have 35s on now. Terry
