Air Down

I went out with some friends yesterday and at the trail head they all started to air down. I then realized that I had heard of this practice, but being new to wheeling had never done it. I also then realized that out of all the posts I had read there was no real guide for airing down. A search for information did not yield any good results. I have a 92 80 mostly stock. I have BFG 315/75/16 AT's. What air pressure would be reccomended and why is airing down desireable?

PS. Ran Turkey Creek from Bumble Bee to Cleator.

Better traction and smoother ride are the benefits. A fully inlflated tire will dig you into the sand, one at 16 pounds will get you out. By running lower tire pressure, you get a larger foot print that can conform to the surface you are going over better. As far as how much to let out, that depends on the terrain. In most cases (rocks, sand) I'll run 18 to 14 lbs.
