APRIL 4TH RUN--Chiva Falls/Tanque Verde Loop Figure Eight

This won't be anything like the normal and exciting "Chiva Falls Run". This will be even better. We'll be entering and exiting the area in different ways. Add to that the Lower then Upper Tanque Verde Trails and we have ingredients for a real winner!

We'll be entering the area via the north on FR4417. One trek, most of you have never been on. Great views of Mica Mountain abound. It makes for a good warm-up trail for what's to come.

When we hit the FR4426/4417 junction we'll take 4426 to FR4405 where the fun begins. This is the start of the lower loop. The lower loop climbs and decends three peaks until it finally ends up down in the wash.

Once in the wash there's some rocky areas, sand, and maybe some mud.

Then comes the climb out....the start of the upper loop.

Keep climbing:

Fun stretches:

Then comes the difficult downhill above Chiva Falls:

Then we'll head to the Falls:

Then it's back out and to the main trail:

When we again hook up with FR4426 we'll run it until FR4417 though this time we'll exit via the main NW route. Eventually we'll get the Three Feather's where it's pick your route.

Left side (very difficult):

Right side (difficult and very risky body damage wise):

Or, up the center (moderate):

And after Three Feathers there's one more optional climb out...FUN:

Some folks asked about in-area hotels. There's four new ones at one interchange that complete so rates are lower. Plus, they are 2-miles from Lil' Abner's Restaurant. Plus, plus, they are next to the McDonalds where Becky and I will hit for breakfast before heading to the meeting place. So, take your pick. All are on the NW side of I-10 and Cortaro Road (exit 246).

INFORMATION ON THE FOLLOW-UP SUNDAY TRAIL RUN:

Trail: Rice Peak (Santa Catalina Mountains...SCENIC run...climb to 7500-feet for amazing views including the famous Charouleau Gap area)
Meeting Time: 8:30AM (Pull out at 8:45)
Meeting Place: McDonalds...Cortaro Road and I-10 (exit 246)
Trail Rating: Mostly a casual 2.5 with a few 3.0 sections
Trip duration: About 3-hours so a return trip to Phoenix is quicker.

We're going to start out at the Peppersause Campground on the Mt Lemmon Backroad. From there we'll take the "non-normal" way to the top and return. There will be some VERY tight switchbacks that make for some challenge. One hill is really steep as well though nothing that will scare you off. The last 1/4-mile climb to the actual summit is very steep and loose. Come on out!

ARE YOU READY? Saturday is the day. Please allow me to clarify a few things about the trip(s):

*Any STOCK Land Cruiser or FJ Cruiser can complete the Chiva and Rice Peak runs.
**The Chiva Falls trail has difficult obstacles though almost all have bypasses. Don't let the pics freak you out if you have a stocker. There will be a few places where a stock vehicle will need a spot, but all should be well.
**The Rice Peak trail is the "scenic" run of the weekend. It's mostly laid back requiring little concentration though there are a few really steep areas where your eyes will be alert. Again, OK For any stock LC or FJC.

NOTE: For those who are not coming to Chiva on Saturday but are thinking they have Sunday open and want to run Rice, you can meet us in Oracle at the Circle K at 9:30. It'll be the FIRST Circle K on the WEST side of town right past the BUSINESS AREA entrance off of AZ77. (There's another CircleK in the MIDDLE of town and that is NOT the meet spot) The overnight group who is meeting in Marana at 8:30 will convoy to Oracle to pick up Sunday-only runners. So you see, there's lots of options. The Rice PEak Loop run will only take about 3-4 hours MAX...GUARANTEED...so a return to home is cake and makes for a nice Sunday drive.

Meeting places, hotels, other scoop....all on the forum at: http://forum.ih8mud.com/az-arizona-l...ml#post4274524

OK, so who all's coming who hasn't signed up yet? Trust me....CHIVA FALLS TRAIL IS OUR FAVORITE IN ALL OF ARIZONA! It's a blast for every vehicle build from stock to mild to wild.

You folks gonna be using ham or CB on the trails?

I'm driving through the area with the wife about then, we were thinking about taking the Benz, but with the run on Saturday, maybe I gotta drive the 80 instead!

:-)

Nobody has signed up for Sunday's run so we will not be having one. Still on the table is Saturday's Chiva/Loop run and optional dinner at Lil' Abner's Steakhouse (at 6:30).
