I have a 2H running on WVO. Since I put in my system, I have had to change the glow plugs every § months or so. Anybody else noticing anything like this?
I've had the same problem with my 87 HJ60 with a 2H on WVO, and am on my third set in the last 12 months. However, I was getting cheap glowplugs and some of them were faulty at new. I switched to NGK now. I've wired a wilson switch and use 20.5V glow plugs (meant for a 3B) with full 24V battery voltage. I understand this should work like the older Toyota glow systems. I'm waiting to see how the NGK's stand up, they've only been in a couple months.
this seems to have come up a couple times. I echo C-safari as it sound more electrical than fuel. I'm not sure how SVO could ruin plugs in the first place.
At any rate the stock glow plug system with the timer etc. has never been that reliable for our small cruiser crew here. The stockers in my case are rated for 10.5v (If I remember) so in the automated system the are timed depending up the intake temp. probe reading etc. Sometimes they work good but sometimes that system doesn't work quite right so you have to back the key off and light them again etc. etc. The result can be lighting plugs rated for less volts super red hot to often burning them out. Mine is switched to a fully manual system with a button and plugs rated for 14v (if I remember). That way I can hold them on as long as I want without roasting them. So in the winter it usually takes 30secs. It may be the same for you guys except your truck is 24v so you'll have to look at your details.
The fully manual style is sort of useful as well if you happen to have some cooler svo flowing through you can hold the button to help it through a rough patch, the same goes for cold start ups when there's all the whiter smoke, just hold the buttton and the extra glow causes a smoother start up. I've had my same lower voltage plugs now since 2003.
FWIW,
Aaron
My glow plugs just caved last week. I've had to start on ether every am and have some new 14v gps on order from 4wheel auto out of Edmonton.
I'm not disappointed as almost 7 years for a set of glow plugs is likely above average.
