My 13B-T will run on HYDRAULIC FLUID

Now before anyone says what a polluting bastard, an incident happened last week where I was servicing heavy equipment.
Anyways my BJ 74 started sputtering (ran out of fuel) guage read 1/3 tank . Well its fixed now. I was 5km from the machines and 80km from the nearest fuel station . Well I had 2 five gallon pails of AW 46 hydraulic fluid and 3/4 of a gallon of fuel conditioner. So in goes the conditioner and then the hydraulic fluid . Fired her up and shook up the tank really well "stop and go on the brakes" . I was worried about the pollution factor . Any ways it ran really well , in fact I couldnt tell a difference and no smoke either . I drove her into town went home. The next morning it was -1c my 13B-T fired right up smoked a bit (blueish) and then put fuel into it. It was kind of expensive running hydraulic fluid but I made it home. I didnt have a siphon hose or else I would of ran it on conditioner to the machine I serviced. 1400kms later it still runs great and no IP pump leaks

hydraulic fluid and ATF has been added to diesel for lubrication by many for many years.

Any oil will burn in a diesel. As long as it can be squirted in by the injector. Where or not it is good for your engine or the environment is another story.

Yep. Pretty much anything... for a little while at least.

Back when My HJ60 was an HJ60 and not an "HJ62" (Sheila), I ran up to Atlanta for some parts. I was running low on fuel and did not realize that in downtown Atlanta there are exactly zero gas stations that sell diesel (and I tried at least 10). I was getting kinda sweaty and nervous about running out of fuel, especially in the part of town where I had found myself hunting for diesel, after dark, so I went in to the next station I found, bought four little Crisco bottles and filled her up. I got some odd looks from other customers, like I was Doc Brown refueling the DeLorean's Mr. Fusion with garbage. It ran on that ~1 gallon for nearly 20 miles, smoother and better than petroldiesel. But this is obviously no surprise.

I believe that biodegradable hydraulic oil is just veggie oil. People operating hydraulics in the bush like it because if they loose a line they don't have issues with the government environmental officers like if they had used mineral based hydraulic fluid. However, the equiptment has to be designed to run veggie hydraulic fluid. You can't just use it on any hydraulics.

Some hydraulic oils contain a lot of zinc anti-wear additives. This is seriously unhealthy stuff to be burning and breathing.

Just ask any welder what breathing in burnt zinc does to you.

But you will never have to worry about moss growing on your head or in your lungs. BTW, I am always spreading out either zinc pellets or spraying zinc in solution to keep the moss off the roof. But you are right, the spray solution I mix up has all kinds of nasty warnings.

The biodegradable hydraulic oil sold in BC has no toxins. That is the main reason for the demand for it and the hydraulic equiptment which uses it. Can't see why you couldn't run it in your vehicle. if it was harmful to metals and seals, it wouldn't be used.

Would that make it more prone to bacteria etc?

I guess to heat resitant bacteria. A working hydraulic system gets pretty hot.

I've got the MSDS for the Petro-Canada Environ AW hydraulic oil here from a job site where the crane used it for pile driving.

Says the composition is a "mixture of severely hydrotreated and hydrocracked base oil (petroleum)".
Not a vegetable oil.

Products of combustion includes sulphur oxides, but not zinc oxides unlike the regular hydraulic oil.

Was just searching and discovered this one which can be used on any hydraulic application. I wonder if it will work on my power steering?

Hydro Safe Oil
