Canola Oil/Diesel mix
In one of the other posts Brownbear mentioned adding Canola oil in with your diesel fuel and running it. Does this really benefit your engine in any way?
PressOn said he has been doing it for about a month now and his engine runs smoother and seems to have less emissions. Are there any downsides to adding canola oil with diesel? Can someone expand on this for me. |

I was planning to hit Superstore. Someone said a while ago that it was cheap there in the bulk plastic barrels. Will post up the price when I find out.

I'm trying to research it too, but I have a funny feeling there is nothin but benifits to doing this... and I just feel like a litre of veggie added is a litre of petro saved, or at least a little less cancer causing agents in the air!

I believe canola is around 1$ a liter Can. maybe less even in bulk....a good deal nowadays...there is less tax on food products so that makes it cheaper....45% of gas/fuel prices is tax.....:( we're getting screwed by our government's into buying at the price they want....Fuel should be a buyer's market not a cash cow...isn't there enough profit in oil? I know how many billions they siphon from all of us, it's brutal...these oil types live a high life they don't want to give up.

i've run veggie oil of various types through my 2H at concentrations from 10% up to 90-something %.
It runs rougher at startup, smoother at full throttle. Idle is smoother too, once the motor is hot. __________________ 91 fj80 w/ 93 1HD-T. I checked @Costco in Calgary and they had 3 different grades of canola oil the least expensive being fryer grade was 1.77 per litre for 16 litre. I'm going to keep looking for lower price and larger quanities.

Filtering
What do you have to do to filter the used oil?
I have an unlimited source of used oil. Would be pretty fun to fill a bunch of scepter cans with used veggie instead of diesel for long trips and only put in 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank of dino dielsel at a time! __________________ 1981 JDM BJ44 RHD - Going under the knife soon! |

do a search for SVO filter
you'll get lots and lots of information. The filtering depends on how dirty the oil is. Best first step is to let it sit for a week or two so that water/grit will settle out, then you can filter either through a gravity sock-type filter, or you can build a pressurized system. __________________ 91 fj80 w/ 93 1HD-T. WVO
In addition to letting the solids settle out the WVO also needs to be heated to remove any water. then pumped through a filter.
tons of info out there. |

first filter the oil with a cheese cloth, let it settle for a day or 2. pump through a 10-20 micron filter . you can add kerosene and gas and some cetane booster you will get a clean burning fuel. |

Think of this, that oil sits in a vat all day at 375 deg F up until it is poured into its waste container. There couldn't be that much water in it at that time. The only way damaging water can enter the oil really is if it is exposed to the elements. I would be more concerned with tallows turning fluid under heat then gelling in your filter. |

ok, are there regular rolls of tolet paper? or some kind of paper media?
These are pretty reasonably priced, I was looking at premo bypass filters, and the cost would triple the cost of these, although they do burn off moisture contminates. Does anyone else use SVO as a additive in there dino Diesel? __________________ 1986 BJ70, 24v with a 3B Last edited by Eric Winkworth; 05-17-08 at 09:07 AM. |

John M Galt on here is the guy who blends canola with diesel in his Bj74. Look for his posts he describes his process. I'm going to go with a Plant drive heater and parts. Then I will collect used oil at home and keep it in black drums in the sun till they setttle. And only take from 2/3 up, and clean the drum out every once and awhile. We have an alternative fuel section here on mud, so I'm going to move this thread over there with a re-direct. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

I've read sites that say the same thing I did. It really only a problem with outdoor collection points etc.

Seems to me that if you are pulling the oil straight out of the fryer, you probably don't have to worry about water.
it is unwise to build a WVO fuel system without a water-separator anyway. What little water might be left in the oil should get caught there. having said that, if you have space in the garage to let oil settle out for a week or two, the only downside to doing so is that you use up a little storage space. The benefits include less particulate clogging up your filters (both your wvo filter and your fuel filter(s)) and less chance of introducing water, and if you've got any tallow or other fatty solids, those should settle out as well. __________________ 91 fj80 w/ 93 1HD-T. i usually run soy biodiesel from a local source,,, but i have added all manner of store oils to regular diesel just trying stuff out, in fact, one camping trip with a bunch of friends we had a fishfry with 2 gallons of peanut oil left after the feast,,, i filtered the used oil with a coffee filter contraption i set up and poured it right in the tank,,, most of the oil i add including the soybean bio smells more like a remote control airplane than french frys but that was a pretty tasty smelling mix.

not that I disagree with being careful about the fuel you use... I just wonder how much water regualr dino diesel has in it right out of the pump... The storage tanks being underground and in some cases they have fairly sketcy access lids, that are exposed to rain/snow etc... not to mention moisture, rust in the tank itself...
The main place I have been purchasing diesel just dug there main diesel tank up because they had a leak issue... which to me means potential dirt, and water contaminaton.... I know you want your filters and FWS on your truck to not have to filter tons of water... but to me in some cases depending on where you live, and get your diesel, it's alot better making your own fuel.... cheers __________________ 1986 BJ70, 24v with a 3B |

most if not all diesel stations will have good filters and water separators between the underground tank and the nozzle, they were prolly catching lots of water in the separator and thats how they new of the leak issue? if you station does not have good filters find another one.

Just started using bio diesel (from used rapeseed/sunflower oil) after discovering a local company refining it.It's fully filtered/converted/dried etc into a quality diesel and the LC runs great @ 50% mix with pump diesel at the moment.Personally I wouldn't run raw unrefined veg oil no matter how clean it was.Apparently there a |
