2nd tanks
so this is pretty general but hopefully someone has thought along the same lines.....
What 2nd tanks are you all running, either just for more capacity or for a different fuel type (VO, WVO, BD, etc.) custom, aftermarket? I was thinking about mounting a second 60 series tank under my 60 series tank in my 60 series to increase capacity, offer the potential to use it as a VO tank, and I don't use that space for a spare tire. I may be able to get a second 60 tank and it looks like it could be sandwiched (with fabrication of course) and not hang too low... maybe a thin skid plate? Thoughts?

That would be a LOT of weight back there wouldn't it? 180L full!

I was thinking the same thing but I guess that is why I posted up, wondering the best way to get more range and maybe run dual fuels..... I guess long range tanks just assume that much weight.
My old FJ-55 had a 50 gal tank under the cargo area... when close to full, it was heavy but had 900 mile range : ) also, it looks like a 2nd 60 series tank would fit well since the dims match and it is relatively flat... __________________ Jeffrey Save Tellico! just fitted 150ltr second tank to my hj60
i got 2 old household lpg cylinders, cut a calculated amount off the top of each one, welded baffel plates inside, and welded the two bottoms together to make a large tank. i then took off the bull bar and put the tank in its place, low enough not to restrict air flow. Im waiting to get chatted by police but as it holds filtered wvo, technically its FOOD not fuel. i thought its much safer for road handleing than at the back as when i load up for a trip away everything gets loaded in the back and this now balances some wieght to the front |

You mounted a metal tank on the front bumper of your HJ60? hmmm...... not a bad idea I guess but in an accident someone could get fryoil on them : )
I thought about just mounting a second swivel on my rear bumper for two jerry cans and using them for VO though I would have to heat them half the year which is not impossible. I am not sure if on the front or back would be better but some how, some way I am going to figure out a 2nd tank. Since I don't have a spare under the cargo area, my thought was to put the tank there.... __________________ Jeffrey Save Tellico! i removed the bumper as well, to minimise the amount it protrudes.I removed the brackets the bumper fits to,welded two bits of steel the corresonding size to the tank which slip into the chassis and secured with a bolt, all fit very snugg.
sounds as though it will fit well wher you said,up front gives you good wieght distribution though as most cargo goes in the back. |

Is it too late to go back on my thoughts ? !!
![]() I'm making a 2nd tank to go between the wheel wells inside, just behind the back of the back seat. I think it is going to end up around 100L or so. I had also thought of making a very small tank under the hood on the passenger (stbd) side, behind the air filter cannister. Might only hold a few gallons, but would be enough for the back and forth to work. Then I figured if I am going to the trouble of doing all the conversion stuff, I might as well throw in a proper tank. Easiest place for me to put it (and warmest in the winter) is inside the truck. So... there it goes! I figure it should weigh less than 200Lbs and it is directly over the rear axle. Most of the time I don't have other stuff in there - so I'm not all that concerned about the extra weight now. (not quite sure what I was thinking before, it's not a h nda civic...)

I agree about offsetting the weight by having the tank in the front or at least as close as possible. A small tank over the rear axle is at least low COG as well. I am not sure what to do but all are good ideas : )

the big tank up front is for my long trips away,
prior to this i used the main tank for veg and a 10ltr start up tank in the space next to the exhaust manifold, with a heat sheild, that was fine for years. Now i use the main tank for start ups, the big tank up front for veg, but ive still got the little tank under the bonnet[not normaly used] so that if i go for a long trip i have the ability to use both big tanks for veg.[250 ltrs] and the little tank for start up shut down just a thought , if you place the tank inside can you still put the seat down ,if you need to transport various cargo

Nope, but I can't anyway, I have a child seat strapped in there.

What about a long narrow tank underneath between the rear driveshaft and frame? I think I've heard of this method being used on the HJ60's in Australia. The weight would be centred, but I'm not sure how the fill tube is exposed?
I'm in the process of a 2-tank WVO conversion on my HJ60. I began by running a blend of WVO/Kero/RUG/Thinner and my original tank got plugged up! I removed the tank and cleaned it but now I'm thinking of replacing the OE tank with a prefab stainless 2 compartment tank, large side (80L) for WVO and small side (10L) for diesel. Problem is, my local stainless shop wants $1500 to build it (including a 3-way valve to control both fuel fills)!! I can't decide what to do, but I'm getting tired of filling the 10L jug (behind the air cleaner) that is my fuel tank! Maybe I'll retro-fit a used plastic tank from a wrecker and put a small "startup" diesel tank behind the air cleaner... |

with what? did you clean the tank first before adding that mix of tank cleaners blended with fuel?

I had the tank cleaned at a radiator shop after I ran the blend of fuel. Lots of black flakes and sludge were cleaned out and now its good. I used inline pre-filters and a large heated filter to catch any of this before it went to the IP.

I used a tank from a grand cherokee and put it up where the spare tire was. Fit in there like it was made for it. It was like 20 bucks at a junkyard. This is for my troopie, but I am guessing you would have just as much room in a 60. Maybe more.

man that is the space I was thinking... where the spare was... need to make a trip to the yard to see if I can score a GC tank. Thanks for the tip!

Mine was custom tank, but just basically an aluminum box tucked up under the original tank, took out the spare tire. I don't like it, it hangs too low for comfort, but with a bit of a lift and a skid plate, I would be a bit happier. I started with the inside idea too, but wanted to preserve the ability lay the seat down flat and sleep back there.
In cold weather it is not so bad for heating the oil, most of that takes place in the hoses anyhow. __________________ 87 FJ 60 with a 2H and Greasecar WVO kit. |

has anyone successfully done stacked 60 tanks in a 60? I wanted to do this with the extra tank from my donor vehicle when I was having my diesel swap done, but my mechanic said no...
It seemed sensible to me. |

I will measure a 60 tank and see how it would fit... that was my original question as well... someone pointed to a grand cherokee tank as an option...

Does anyone following this thread have actual real knowledge about weight loading? I want to put two tanks in the back too, but I've already got a rear bumper that weighs about the same as the rest of the truck, plus my entire life in the cargo compartment.
I can't think of any real reason why it would be bad to just improve the rear suspension as necessary and fill up the back... but I'm not someone who knows what I'm doing. |

Hello. I just bought a 1987, one-owner HJ60 2H, 4.0-liter, Diesel, 5-speed. On wikipedia, I read that the LC-70s have a 90-liter tank, with 2 tanks as an option. Does anyone know whether a 2nd tank was optional on the 60s? If so, the "space" is there.
I carry me and nothing, so the weight of the 2nd tank filled with vegetable oil is not a problem. Where it goes matters in terms of weight distribution, center of gravity (and actually, I find that trucks ride better with more weight). I will probably pay someone experienced in conversions to rig up the heaters and filters. One problem with a tank inside the vehicle is that I cross the border into the US once every week, and they want to know what everything is. "Oh, fuel INSIDE the vehicle!" ... no, it is vegetable oil... "Oh, burning fuel with no road tax on it!" I can see it now. Underneath is better for me. I may someday want to use the cargo space for something (cargo?). |

I'm in the process of setting up a second tank. I bought a grand cherokee tank as per the advice in this forum and it looks like its going to ride way too low for my liking. It's back to the wrecking shop for me. There are a couple other tanks there that look like they may work out, but I'll post here when I find something that works out. If anyone has any new info on this, don't be a miser, let us all know!

I don't think that it would be any problem to mount a second tank under the first tank. After taking one off and seeing how it is done, the metal straps that hold the first tank on would be easy to duplicate for a second strap.
Another think to think about would be fabricating something that bolts into the wholes of the spare tire mount, on either side (wheel sides) of the tank. Although the 60 series tank is not flat, it is thicker towards the front so it might get too thick, then there is the sender tube problem, the bottom tank might have issues. What about using two 40 series tanks side by side? If there is enough room you might be able to use the 60 tank strap bolt holes for longitudinal straps and the spare tire mount holes for the horizontal. I think this may be a better option than two 60 series tanks. |

Question about acidity of the oil.
I have 50 gallons that I need to pickup but the resteraunt changes it once a week. Looks pretty dark but want to make sure it can be used. How acid can the oil be before I reject it? |

harvy, please start a new thread in here for that question. This thread is about tanks thanks.
I would not stack tanks at the back. Too much weight and too far behind the axle, the arm will add a lot of weight to the springs. Also it limits you offroad. I've smacked the tire enough that I don't keep a tire there anymore. If you live in a warm climate(not in Canada) I would use the main tank for the veg and mount a 25 litre diesel tank somewhere else. In Canada I truly believe you will not get to use your veg oil at all if your tank is under the truck. It will take too long to get to operating temp. Or the electric pre heater at the IP will be on all time giving you a 30 amp load(burning fuel). Your stuck in cold climates having the tank inside. A 60 litre tank will fit along the side behind the wheel well and up against the cargo panel. It takes up next to nothing space. As for crossing the border, each state has it's own rules regarding road tax. The border guard is only going to be concerned with contraband or stuff not allowed in the states. You can always build a nice storage box around the tank, then it doesn't look like liquid coke container
