Anyone convert a bj40 to biodiesel

hi all,

I am new to ih8mud.com and just purchased a 1979 bj40 that I want to convert to biodiesel. This is my first diesel and second toyota. I sold my 4-runner last year to get a subarbu, and missed having a small suv dearly. I love the landcruisers because my brother used to have an fj60 that was indestructible and would go anywhere . I love these old cruisers. That being said i have started doing some research on biodiesel and was wondering who if anyone can recommend a biodiesel conversion.

Has anyone used lovecraft biofuels? I have a friend with a old MB300 that has done the conversion and raves about it. I have seen some old fj's on their website but no real information.

I have the 3b motor and besides what I have read, I presume i could run e40 and should not have a problem with hoses deteriorating. My brother runs biodiesel in his Passat with no problems and no conversion with the blend. Can you run e40 without changing out rings or causing a problem or actually doing a conversion? Also I understand that most people like to run two tanks for starting and cooling the vehicle. Does lovecraft's single tank conversion live up to the hype?

I appreciate any information you can provide. The motor on the BJ was completely rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago. Would the rings need to be replaced again if I did this?

Thanks for your help.

To run biodiesl the only thing that you *may* need to change is the fuel lines depending on if they are old style rubber. You would have to change them to newer viton type. If you are running biodiesel, you don't need two tanks, or heaters or any of that. That is only to run WVO and SVO. Thats just straight or wast vegetable oil without it being chemically changed to biodiesel. The only difference between petroleum diesel and biodiesel is the bio will gel up around 40 degrees before regular diesel. I think. If you run a blend then you can do it like normal diesel when its cold. But...for bio, no worries about separate tanks or any of that. You just have to change the lines, and then probably your fuel filter at the next oil change.

If you choose to run Biodiesel in your diesel, it may be a good idea to go ahead and clear the fuel tank and lines of any sediment as it will all come loose and clog your system as a result of the BD.

There is not conversion as stated, just run it and do some preventative things to makes sure you don't end up inoperable due to clogged fuel filter, old rubber style lines being eaten, etc.

I ran B100 when warm and now B50 in my '87 2H without any mods.... I had a new tank though and I carry a spare fuel filter and most of my lines are metal, the rubber lines are newer so I am checking them regularly.

Thanks for all the advice. I am starting to get addicted to this site. I appreciate all the information and will post pics of my new bj when I get some. I think I will go with new lines and filters after my first couple of tanks of regular diesel so I can compare the two different fuels versus power, fuel economy, and performance.

I appreciate it.

...I experience less power, fuel economy, etc. but not anything that makes me not want to run BD : )
