Does bio = more smoke??
I recently made the switch to bio (B99) and I have noticed more smoke on start-up regardless of the ambient temp. Is this common? I have done some searching and found some threads that mentioned checking and changing bad glow plugs. Prior to the switch I would experience some smoke about 10 seconds after starting at which time she would run a little rough until warmed up. I am planning to check the glow plugs as soon as I get a chance and replace if necessary. For those who are running bio did you experience more start-up smoke after the switch? Is there anything to do about it?

The color of the smoke is all important.

I believe it was white smoke in both cases but I will double check this morning.

Hi Paco, I run B20 in my 85 BJ60 and my 90Hdj81 with no "additional" smoke on start-up. One thing that I've noticed however(outside the issue of bio) is my BJ can't be started smoothly without the cloud show and associated roughness unless you wait at least 5-10 seconds AFTER the glow light goes out (with the key still on). The glows stay on well after the light goes out. Hope this helps. Tony

Thanks for the tip on waiting. Is your glow on a timer? Mine will stay on as long as I have the key turned back into position. I usually hold about 20 to 25 sec if it is cold in the morning. Today was no exception to the "cloud show". I did look to check the color and it was more blue than white. She starts right up and runs perfect for 5 - 10 sec before the cloud and rough running starts. After a ten minute drive and stop there is no cloud or rough running - starts right back up perfect.

for me the answer is a clear YES. when I run the HJ60 on B99, it starts harder, and smokes a lot more (white), no matter how warm it is. my glow plugs are brand new. I have not changed the injectors yet. Once it is warmed up it runs just perfect. j __________________ turboed 84HJ60, in San Diego. |

I double glow at just about any temperature on first starts and that prevent most smoke at start up. B99 with plugs less than a year old.

So I did a triple glow this morning and it reduced the blue smoke slightly, but it was not as cold either. Hopefully this weekend I will have time to check the resistance on my plugs to see if I need new ones.

Also, make sure you change your filter after running a tank on higher percentages of bio-diesel. I learned the hard way on the way back from Moab.

blue smoke doesn't sound too much like a fuel problem, but burning engine oil.
I run both B99 and B20 in my rig, depending on which station I'm closer to when I need to fill up, and occasionally dino-grease when I'm away from home. I haven't noticed any change in smoke with fuel. I definitely get a cloud of white/grey smoke and rough running if I haven't adequately warmed the plugs. After the engine is warm I don't even bother with the glows on restart. No smoke and smooth start. One thing I do notice, is the engine is quite a bit quieter on B99 vs dino. A very welcome benefit. x2 on the fuel filter!!! 5 minutes and $5 saves a lot of hassle. __________________ Timothy 1989 FJ62 1985 BJ60instein (for sale )1981 BJ60 RIP (engine kindly donated to the '85 )1984 Mercedes 300SD - biodiesel |
