The engine date is cast on the driver's side of the block. See Degnol's post for a pic and de-coding. With Toyota's JIT production, the engine cast date (and carb date, t-case date, and R&P date...) never varies by more than a few days from vehicle build date.

The date is also cast on top of the cylinder head, easier to see on a fully dressed engine. But heads can be swapped from engine to engine, so...
