Question 2000 4Runner Surge

Couple months ago Check Engine light comes on, Code say #1 O2 sensor which was replaced with an OEM. Now the 4Runner has a slight surge. When sitting at idle the tach jumps back at forth about 200 rpm. You can hear/feel the surge in the engine. Also has a hesitation when accelerating. Check engine light has not come on since replacement of O2 Sensor. Any ideas other than being raped by a local dealer? Thanks, Jeff

How many miles on the motor? Last service? Type of air cleaner you are using?

Surge

Guess I should have added that when I first noticed the surge, I did replace the Fuel filter with OEM. 63,000 miles and last serviced less than 3,000 miles ago. Did replace Air filter with OEM also. Thanks, Jeff

Jeff,

Good chance the MAF is dirty. I would pull it out and clean it with electrical contact cleaner. Don't use a harsh cleaner as this may ruin it and they are expensive. Wouldn't hurt to run some fuel system cleaner such as SEAFOAM also.

My 3.4 was running rough at 35,000 or so. I ended up cleaning the MAF and doing a motor treatment with SEAFOAM to burn off the carbon build up. Motor ran like new afterwards.

You can check the Pcv valve to see if it is gummed up, they cost like $5...
The MAF is about $110...

Less likely would be the TPS (throttle position sensor). I changed mine but that wasn't it, so I have a good used one if you need it

Good luck! Also, you can check out Yotatech or TTORA for more people who have these vehicles and more 411.

I get it at NAPA here in CA. I clean them out when I go in LOL. Check the SEAFOAM website:

http://www.seafoamsales.com/

Also, make sure you follow the directions, you'd be surprised how many people don't

There is a VERY long thread at Yotatech about SEAFOAM, not bad reading if you have the time.
