Anybody retrofit e-locker rear into 2002 4Runner that has ATRAC?

I'm sick of searching so here goes...

Has anybody actually added the 3rd gen e-locker to the 2001/02 3rd gen with ATRAC? I read a thread where it was thought that perhaps you could swap the whole e-lock axle assembly over and ATRAC would be cool as long as it was an ABS equipped e-lock axle assembly. Can anybody answer definitively on this or point me somewhere that can?

I understand that you can mod the housing and add the third (I've seen all the write-ups around on this mod), but I want to make it stupid-easy and just swap the whole assembly.

What about differences/similarities between the Taco rears and Runner rears? Are they bolt-on swappable? Where can i find info on that? Where's the ultimate 4runner forum/website?

I come from the Land Cruiser world, so my knowledge on Tacos and Runners is limited.

Looks like you haven't got much help here, but its an interesting question.

Have you tried Yotatech.com or UltimateYota.com (mostly former Yotatech'ers)? They are the MUD's for 4Runner tech.

I know some old (1st gen Taco's) ABS systems had the sensor on the 3rd member . That might have changed by now, IDK.

And if you're worried about the interchangeability, if the two systems can co-exist, yes. They will get along just fine. Just think of the TRD Locker as an ARB. The reason a ARB works so well in other brake biased systems is b/c the wheel speed sensors don't pick up any differentiation. They are assuming, as they monitor, the vehicle is traveling in a straight line b/c both axles have the same rotation, side to side.

The TRD system is not an automatic one, so that might help. You can buy cable actuators for them and leave the computer retrofit out altogether.

If I could find a chunk, and that's where the ABS sensor is, I'd go for it. It might not be though, it might be in the WSS's. And come to think of it that still wouldn't stop it from working. Just use a block-off if your TRD has the ABS sensor in the chunk. The rest of the system won't even know it's there, unless the new stuff is tied into the ATRAC

Hope that helps, if not, I just like hearing myself talk....

The 4Runners have two sensors on the rear axle at each hub but the rear wheels are braked together as one circuit. My guess is you'd have to see if the ATRAC version has two brake lines to the rear axle or not. If not you'd be good.

This might help you for wiring of the locker.
Toyota Electric Locker
The RRdiflock light is in the dash too if you want to link it in.
Here are some tips to do that

Just an FYI. My 99 4Runner has a factory e-locker and it disables the ABS system when it is engaged.

01-02s have two rear brake lines.

Well a year after I posted for info and I've now completed my swap. I actually did a double-swap of rears (and IFS fronts to keep the gears matching) between my wifes new-to-us '99 LTD that came with the e-locker and my '02. Real quick and easy to swap the rears and no big deal to drill the two holes for the brakeline bracket. (More info in this thread on Yotatech). The fronts was a bit more work.

And there's no question that it's absolutely, completely, totally, 1000 times easier to swap complete axle assemblies than it would be to mod the non-elock diff housing to accommodate the elock diff. I would wager it takes less time to do as well.

Just got to finish the wiring on mine now and I'm set.

Thanks for the update on the older thread. Sounds like hunting for a factory optioned rear diff lock is the quickest approach if a guy can live with those model years. and enjoy your locked 02

Minus the ATRAC I just lived through this easier approach as well. If you are interested the locker dash switch lights up on the Tacoma where the 4Runner one does not. Just swap the pins for easy compatibility.
