At my last fill-up, mostly in town driving, I got 18.5 mpg from my 3.4L.
That is with 255s, ARB, 3" lift, sliders, camper shell, tool box, etc. On the highway I'll get about 20-21mpg at 70-75 mph. For a semi equipped 4x4 - that is more than acceptable to me. __________________ 97' LX450 (WIFE'S) OEM CUPHOLDER, PHH, POWER ANTENNA FIXED & RECENT FRONT AXLE REBUILD! 01' TACOMA DBL CAB, LIFT, ARB, ARE SHELL, HI-LIFT, SLIDERS, ETC. 100% stock Tacoma 3.4L. 22MPG on the highway. ~18MPG in the city. It was about the same with my past 3.4L 4Runners, too.

Those of you with 265/75's and/or a lift, how are you calculating MPG? On-Board Computer? Scan Gauge II? My 98 4Runner went from 21MPG on the highway (stock) to 19MPG after I added on 265/75/16 (265/70/17's, actually, but the same thing). Did you get your speedo calibrated for the bigger tires? Are you going off of a GPS reading? I'm astounded that you can get above 20MPG on 32" tires.
To calculate my MPG, I always had the cruise set at ~70 MPH (any slower, I'd have grandma's in Buicks yelling at me), took the miles travelled and divided by the gallons I just put in. Did this for several months to get a more accurate figure. __________________ 2001 Tacoma DC TRD Off-Road |

Han,
I calculate MPG the exact same way you do. Nothin fancy. I am religious w/ cruise control use, not exceeding 60mph. Yah, I take some grief over it at times. I've radically changed my driving habits due to the price of fuel. I check my tire pressures at least once a week also. (35psi FRT / 45psi REAR). What kind of tires are you running ? |

I have a Super Lift speedo recalibrator installed (only
) on my truck since my tires are taller (255/85/r16) I figured that the cost of the recalibrator is less than a speeding ticket!Having that installed, I used my odometer for mileage. For accuracy I double check my speed against my GPS and I am within 1% at 70mph. __________________ 97' LX450 (WIFE'S) OEM CUPHOLDER, PHH, POWER ANTENNA FIXED & RECENT FRONT AXLE REBUILD! 01' TACOMA DBL CAB, LIFT, ARB, ARE SHELL, HI-LIFT, SLIDERS, ETC. For me the difference is primarily the tires. With the LT all terrains, even in the shorter size, I was never over 20mpg, but with the taller, but lighter street tires, I get better mileage. I still have the all terrains on wheels, but I haven't put them on for almost a year. __________________ jetboy, 75-40 |

My 06 X-cab, V6 gets 19-20 around town and 24 HWY.
Im pretty happy with that honestly. I use cruise control as much as I can. The rig is PAINFULLY STOCK though, but hey...its a DD. Shopping for a Tacoma at the moment.
I wish all of you had stated whether or not you have an automatic or a standard tranny. I know the standard gets better MPG's, but I wouldn't mind knowing how much better. __________________ "On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero" |

see post #2 My '01 is an automatic. I only drove stick until this truck and though I miss shifting gears sometimes - I really like NOT shifting more! Plus todays automatic transmissions don't seem to use a lot more fuel since the computer helps with efficient shift points and gear selections. good luck on your search! __________________ 97' LX450 (WIFE'S) OEM CUPHOLDER, PHH, POWER ANTENNA FIXED & RECENT FRONT AXLE REBUILD! 01' TACOMA DBL CAB, LIFT, ARB, ARE SHELL, HI-LIFT, SLIDERS, ETC. I have been trying to convince myself to put on a lift, bigger tires and sliders, but I want to wait to see what the gas prices will do. It still gets the job done for me right now, though. Love the truck. Skiing, camping, "light" wheeling, etc. - she has never let me down. Frame looks clean, too, which is relieving with all these Taco's going to the junk yard (even some 01+).
